The Northern Territory was part of New South Wales from 1825 to 1863 and part of South Australia from 1863 to 1911.
The territory is represented in the Commonwealth parliament by two members in the House of Representatives, currently Warren Snowdon for the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and David Tollner for the Country Liberal Party (CLP), and two members in the Senate, currently Trish Crossin for the ALP and Nigel Scullion for the CLP.
The Northern Territory's alcohol consumption is one of the highest in the world, and certainly the highest in Australia.

Protected areas of Australia are maintained by the Department of the Environment and Heritage, with the exception of the Great Barrier Reef, which is managed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, a body within the department.
Each state is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the areas within its boundaries.
Environment Australia is responsible only for the Commonwealth and off-shore parks in the Australian Capital Territory, the Northern Territory, the Christmas Island Territory, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands Territory, the Norfolk Island Territory and the Australian Antarctic Territory.

Within Australia, Brolgas are found in both the wet-dry tropics of the north (Western Australia, Northern Territory, and Queensland) and the southern temperate regions (eastern South Australia, Victoria, and portions of New South Wales) (Marchant and Higgins 1993).

He determined that so much of the area claimed, as was adjacent to and seaward of the low water mark of the seacoast of the Northern Territory or of any island adjacent thereto, was not land that could be claimed under s 50 of the Land Rights Act.
He considered that the legitimate interests of Aborigines would be protected if traditional fishing rights were preserved and their right to the privacy to the land clearly recognised by the establishment of a buffer zone of sea which could not legally be entered by commercial fishermen or holiday makers (par 423).

The Government is working to establish a network of marine protected areas in Commonwealth waters as part of the National Representative System of Marine Protected Areas.

The Territory Environment Centre says it is disappointed that the Martin Government has reneged on a promise to ban mining in all national parks.
The centre says the Government made the commitment in 2001 but that promise is not included in the draft management plan for the Territory's parks which was released this week.
"Unfortunately conservation reserves are just a small part of the protected areas in the Northern Territory, it's really the national parks that need to be protected from mining if the biodiversity values of those parks are to be upheld," he said.
