To make climbing as safe as possible, most climbers use various methods of protection to prevent injury to themselves and others.
The equipment can be either placed by the climber as they climb, using temporary placements using natural features (also known as traditional climbing), or previously placed bolts (usually, a bolt and a hanger) in the rock (also known as sport climbing).
The International Mountaineering and climbing Federation (or, Union Internationale des Associations D'Alpinisme) is the acknowledged expert on all international climbing and mountaineering matters.
