Protection racket - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A protection racket is an extortion scheme whereby a powerful organization, most often a criminal organization or gang, coerces individuals or businesses to pay protection money which allegedly serves to purchase the organization's "protection" services against various external threats.
When a business refuses to pay for protection, word is put out that they are outside of the local organisation's protection (these organisations often exist in the absence of a trusted police force) and that the business in question is therefore free game for freelance criminals.
This reputation was a catalyst for rebellious attitudes that arose in the late fifties and early sixties, wherein the new generation of organised crime rejected the age-old tradition of the council.

‘Protection’ in the intellectual property sense means that the owner of a patent, a copyright, a trademark or some other piece of intellectual property has a legal right to exclude others from using or reproducing it.
Protection of this heritage cannot be achieved by separating out aspects or elements such as songs or science.
In order to protect traditional knowledge the first requirement is that communities have the right and the power to make the crucial decisions over their livelihood resources and management systems.

Ophthalmologists in the UK have for many years been aware of the steady trickle of severe eye injuries in sport, and (especially in racket sports) have been frustrated by the inability to make firm recommendations on eye protection to those patients who should use it.
It is however unlikely that sufficient protection would be provided for the very high impacts possible in rackets and real tennis.
The Squash Rackets Association are now able to push forward with eye protection in the knowledge that high-quality eye protectors are becoming more widely available.

Reason: Paycheck Protection Racket: Prop 75 is a false hope
To understand why California's Proposition 75—the "paycheck protection" act that aims to prevent public employee unions from using union dues for political campaigning without positive consent from members—has become this year's most popular initiative among Golden State conservatives and libertarians, all you have to do is watch TV.
Prop 75 has been dubbed the "paycheck protection" initiative, but its real value is as a paperwork-creation initiative that would make it harder for unions to continue to monopolize the public's political attention.
Paycheck protection is a concept that has been circulating for years, and it's certainly got an appealing logic.

First, if the state government was really motivated by a concern to protect children, it would not permit Virginians to purchase and order wine directly from Virginia wineries.
The whole point of constitutional protections is to keep government power limited.
The straightforward purpose of the Commerce Clause is to protect each and every American from state-government-imposed “protectionism.” Because each state government could legitimately claim that restricting out-of-state imports would enable it in a wide variety of circumstances to gather more tax revenues, the Framers of the Constitution wisely included no such exception.

Investigations into last month's murder of the Indian Railways Construction Company (IRCON) engineer, Sudhir Kumar Pundir, and his brother, Sanjay Pundir, are starting to point towards the existence of a shadowy protection racket, fed by a secret slush fund run by IRCON's local subcontractors to allow work on the strategic Srinagar-Jammu line to proceed unimpeded.

Ramesh Ponnuru on Death Penalty on National Review Online
A few anecdotes in which public defenders really had been lax in capital murder cases were extrapolated into a critique of law enforcement in the state.
At around this time, Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Representative William Delahunt of Massachusetts, both Democrats, introduced the "Innocence Protection Act." Supposedly, the bill was going to keep innocents from getting put on death row by, among other things, providing for better legal defenses for accused capital murderers.
When Leahy ran the Judiciary Committee last year, it issued a report that said that capital resource centers "may legitimately assert a large number of claims" based on a "reversal of existing law." In other words, it's legitimate for tax-funded public defenders to file a "large number of claims" that are precluded by current law.

The slightly less obvious one is that politicians who favor the protection racket will note net neutrality’s institutional press debut and begin to realize they can’t fly under the radar forever.
