PROTECTION - LoveToKnow Article on PROTECTION
Thus all those parties which were opposed to direct taxes joined their efforts with those interested in securing protective duties, in order to commit the government to the policy of basing its revenue system on a tariff on imports.
The policy of the protectionist party had expanded with the growth of the country and the necessity of coming to terms with the antagonistic elements.
This report remained the armoury from which the protectionists drew their weapons of offence and defence for two generations, and it has not yet ceased to be the centre around which the theoretical contest is waged even to-day in Germany and France as well as in the United States.

Protectionist Party - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Protectionist Party was a political party in Australia from the 1880s until 1909.
For a period, the Protectionists formed government with the support of the Labor Party, on the understanding that they would implement social reforms desired by Labor.
Labor's program, however, was frequently too radical for the Protectionists, and the party ended up splitting, with the most liberal Protectionists, such as Isaac Isaacs and H B Higgins, supporting Labor while Deakin and the others moved towards George Reid's Free Trade Party.

Yet Peel himself shattered the old Tory and Protectionist party in 1846, and soon after called himself a Conservative, and the Peelites were commonly spoken of as Liberal Conservatives.
And when Liberal came into regular use for one party, Conservative became the recognized term for its opposite, Toryism being popularly regarded as the reactionary creed of the supporters of vested interests and opponents of reform of any kind.
The character of any British Conservative party, in the widest sense of the term, has naturally changed, and was bound con tinually to change, with the progress of events.

Party switching is interesting because it seems to work all of the time in local politics, but not all of the time in national politics.
The Liberal Party was an advocate of free trade; the Nacionalista Party was protectionist.
With the passing of genuine party stalwarts before and during martial law, it was inevitable that the concept of party loyalty, however superficially asserted, would vanish completely as the local opportunists of the past became the national leaders of the present.

Isaacs was elected to the first federal Parliament in 1901, as a critical supporter of Edmund Barton and his Protectionist government.
He was one of a group of backbenchers pushing for more radical policies, and he earned the dislike of many of his colleagues through what they saw as his aloofness and rather self-righteous attitude to politics.
Although Isaacs was seen as a Labor appointment, the Scullin government fell at the end of 1931 and the rest of Isaacs's term was spent under the United Australia Party government of Joseph Lyons.

Prime Minister of Australia Information - TextSheet.com
By convention, the Prime Minister is the leader of the party or coalition which has the most seats in the lower house of the Federal Parliament, the House of Representatives.
In the rare event that the Prime Minister's party wins an election but the Prime Minister loses his seat, it is possible for the Governor-General to appoint someone other than a member of Parliament a Minister (and hence Prime Minister) for up to three months.
During this time a member of the Prime Minister's party with a safe seat would be forced to resign, and the Prime Minister would then be elected as member for that seat.

The parties themselves were not national but federal in character and were built upon the parties in various stages of evolution in the states.
The state parties suddenly had to adjust to the competition of the federal parties for their electoral resources in money, candidates, the enthusiasm of active workers and the loyalty of branches.
The fusion of Protectionists and Anti-Socialists began a system of two-party federal politics that was to endure, despite the split in the Labor party during the war and the.reconstruction of the Liberal party under the new name of Nationalists, until the Country party successfully entered federal politics in 19 19.

 The World at War
Neither the Protectionists nor the Free-Traders, which were more political groups than in the modern sense political parties, were unable to form a government in their own majority during the early years of the federation, relying on the support of the Labor Party.
As the Labor party gained strength, and tariffs became economically entrenched and faded as a major issue in a growing industrial and agricultural nation the Protectionists and Free-Traders amalgamated to form the Liberal Party in 1909.
The modern-day National Party, nowadays in coalition with the Liberal Party, had its political origins dating back to 1910 when the state country parties and farmer’s union were formed because of rural dissatisfaction with the urban policies of Labor and the overall view of the Nationalist Party.

It is one of the peculiarities of English politics, however, that a party may come into power because it is the only available one at the time, though it may have no chance of carrying the very principle to which it owes its organized existence.
He was in a minority, but the circumstances were such that no other than a minority government was possible, and he resolved to take the only available means of strengthening his position by dissolving parliament and appealing to the country at the earliest opportunity.
