In ancient times large hyenas ranged over much of Europe and Asia.
The first-mentioned three species make up the subfamily Hyaeninae, while the aardwolf is the only member of Protelinae.
The largest and most well known member of the hyena family, the spotted hyena is primarily a predator, not a scavenger as is commonly thought.

This family of three Recent genera and four species is found in Africa and southwestern and south-central Asia.
The sequence of genera presented here follows that of Simpson (1945), who recognized two subfamilies: Protelinae, with the single genus Proteles (aardwolf); and Hyaeninae, with Crocuta and Hyaena.
As real animals, filling the night wit their maniacal whoops and laughs, they hunt aggressively and are confident enough to terrorize lions.

Aardwolf | | Dictionary & Translation by Babylon
