Proto-Indo-European religion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The main functionaries of the hypothetical Proto-Indo-European religion would have been maintained by a class of priests or shamans.
The various Indo-European daughter-cultures continued elements of the hypothesized PIE religion, syncretizing it with innovations and foreign elements, notably Ancient Near Eastern elements, the reforms of Zoroaster and Buddha, and the spread of Christianity and Islam.
This hypothetical religion would have been the ancestor of the majority of the religions of pre-Christian Europe, of the Dharmic religions in India, and of Zoroastrianism in Iran.

Proto-Indo-Europeans - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The scholarly opinions became basically divided between a European hypothesis, positing migration from Europe to Asia, and an Asian hypothesis, holding that the migration took place in the opposite direction.
They practiced a polytheistic religion centered on sacrificial rites, probably administered by a priestly caste.
It must be understood as a military victory in terms of imposing a new administrative system, language and religion upon the indigenous groups.

In this she contrasts with the Indo-European Earth-Mother, who is the impalpable sacred earth-spirit and is not in herself a creative principle; only through the interaction of the male sky-god does she become pregnant." (Marija Gimbutas (1974) The Goddesses and Gods of Old Europe.
In European folk beliefs, she still moves within pregnant women in the shape of a wandering uterus or a toad.
The change of social structure, religion, and economy was not a gradual indigenous development from Old Europe, but a collision and gradual hybridization of two societies and of two ideologies." (Gimbutas, Marija (1991) The Civilization of the Goddess.

As the pantheons of the individual mythologies related to the Proto-Indo-European religion evolved, attributes of Dyeus were sometimes redistributed to other, newer gods.
In Greek and Roman mythology, Dyeus remained the chief god, while in Vedic and Germanic mythology, the etymological continuants of Dyeus became pale, rather featureless gods, and his original attributes, and his dominance over other gods, were transferred to gods whose names cannot be reconstructed for Proto-Indo-European times, such as Odin, Thor or Indra.
In his aspect as a Father God, his consort was Pltvi Mhter, "Earth Mother".

Numbers, numerals and count in Indo-European: an article by Cyril Babaev
This was the matter of a dialect which existed within the Proto-Indo-European language community, but the stem was the same.
The stem *oi- evidently meant "single", "the only", but could rarely exist just as it was, it usually added a suffix: thus, *oi-k-os existed in Indo-Iranian (Sanskrit eka, Kurdish yak), *oi-n-os was developed in most European languages (like Greek en, Latin unus), and some languages had the form derived from *oi-w-os (for instance, Avestan aeva).
Many features of the language were connected with the religion or mythology, with the understanding of the world which existed at the time.

The author's portrayal of the religion of the Druids and their function in the Celtic society is an interesting interpretation, and while some might argue with it, it remains a perfectly plausible view, well-presented and readily understandable to a modern reader, whatever his religious background may be.
This is due to the fact that her presentation is always given towards discerning patterns, and she makes liberal use of comparisons between Norse pagan religions and related cultural groups, such as the Celts, the Balts, the Slavs, and even the Greeks and Romans.

 (23) The deliberate speculation of the term Proto-Indo-European language; and Sanskrit morphology.
But still, these 18th and 19th century linguists created a term ‘Proto-Indo-European’ for the original parent language which was assumed to be spoken about 5,000 years ago by the nomads who assumingly roamed around near the southeast European plains.
(This will be elaborated in articles 32, 33) Now we should know that apart from the Sanskrit language there is no such thing as Proto-Indo-European language as it is self-evident from the findings of Sanskrit apbhransh words in all the existing Asian and European languages.
They further assumed that from the speech of those earlier nomads came the languages of the world like Greek, Latin, Slavic, Russian, Germanic and Indo-Iranian etc., whereas the Sanskrit language came from the Indo-Iranian group.

Is Indo-European Religion Possible? - ADF Neopagan Druidism
If religion is dependent on our cyclical obligations, or the rites we hold depend on what point we are in the wheel then if the different gods are making very different demands, our practices can hardly be considered the same religion.
The extra effort and energy may make religion more difficult at first, but as the relationships are developed, the better an understanding one has of the gods and his relationship with them.
The ADF liturgy would lend some credence to the notion that our religion is based on this hypothesis, for the gods fit into slots assigned to them as they fill universal I-E functions: the earth mother, the gatekeeper, the bardic deity, the guardians of the fire and the well, the outdwellers, etc.

Everywhere they went they brought their language (proto Indo-European), religion (the sacrificial fire cults of Agni, Varuna, Mitra, Indra, etc), trifunctional caste system, and honor culture.
Advances made in the study of languages and religions during the 19th and 20th centuries lead many scholars to the conclusion that almost all European cultures were descended from the same source; the counquering Aryan tribe (the Basque and Finns are notable exceptions).
To the best of my knowledge the Aryans are the ancestors of peoples living in Northern India, Pakistan and Iran and have nothing to do with any European ethnicity except for the fact that most Europeans speak Indo-European languages just as Aryans and their descended nations.

 An Indo-European FAQ
During the Middle Ages, and especially during the Renaissance, European travelers and merchants to the East soon learned of the existence of Sanskrit [sams-krta “well-made”], which enjoyed a prestige in India similar to that of Latin in Europe as a language of religion, culture, science and higher learning.
IE is not just the ancestor of European languages, but also of languages in India, Iran and other regions in western Asia.
Even some 500 years ago, in the early 1500s, European scholars were becoming acquainted with Sanskrit and noted similarities between some Sanskrit words and forms and comparable ones in Latin and Greek.

In Indo-European Sacred Space, Roger D. Woodard provides a careful examination of the sacred spaces of ancient Rome, finding them remarkably consistent with older Indo-European religious practices as seen in the Vedas of ancient India.

The word ârya, which later simply meant "noble" in Sanskrit, was of course used in European theories of the "master race," the "Aryans." This had one curious consequence.
It was called Sam.skr.ta, Sanskrit, which means "prepared," "cultivated," "polished," "correct." The language based on Pân.ini can be called "Classical Sanskrit," and that of the Vedas "Vedic Sanskrit." Classical Sanskrit remained the language of religion, philosophy, and high literature in India for centuries, and survives today as the indispensible language of religion and serious scholarship.
The language that resulted was tidied up a bit and not precisely identical to the surviving language of the Vedas.
