		Shuswap, as I remember, an amerindian language of British Columbia, i.e.
		the northernmost of the Interior Salish languages, is said to have phonetics that strongly resemble the presumed phonetics of ProtoIndoEuropean.
		I got that from Aert H. Kuipers, The Shuswap Language, 1974.

		One could insert at any point here a a new line as into stream of consciousness and hope it would fit the form of a poem, much as placing sticks together can sort of build a house and hope it will fill the space and serve the same as a house.
		Synonyms and homophones are interesting especially in the protoindoeuropean languages.
		And too, it must be said that Finnegan's Wake, early twentieth century icon as it is in stream of consciousnes certainly stands out as readable- in fact highly so in the hands of someone who also wrote "The Dubliners" and "Poertait of an Artist as a Young Man" Still.

		A remarkable thing happens in such waters: wood, cloth, food, and other organic materials do not decay and disappear — ships that went to the bottom hundreds or thousands of years ago still rest on the seafloor in almost the same condition as when they sailed the surface (via the always excellent lagado on MetaFilter).
		This may bear fruit in study of the ProtoIndoEuropean culture that probably began near this area.
		There's some interesting speculation that the flood which created the Black Sea could have been Noah's flood (if you accept that Noah's flood was not a global flood).

		But supposing that it was the oldest it doesn't explain why it should be the source of the Latin.
		I have no opinion of my own on the subject, but at university I was taught that Latin and Sanskrit are both "daughters" of a Protoindoeuropean language, which was spoken somewhere in the middle of Europe (Ukraine possibly), definitely not near any sea.
		Apparently not everybody, because this thread's main point is to prove it could be otherwise, isn't it?

		I do have a soft spot in my 80s-loving heart for Van Halen, though.
		I’m probably repeating myself here, but some theorize that the word “fuck” has the same protoindoeuropean origin as the words “foe”, “fey”, and “fell” (in the old sense=”evil”) and meant something like “drop dead” (”fuck you”).
		The sexual stuff came later, according to this suppostion.

		The old ads are interesting enough, but what I got stuck on was the GUI Gallery.
		It has a chart showing the development of icons across different systems, across different decades, like how Protoindoeuropean broke down, but by pixels instead of phonemes.
		Like anything really small that persists over time, the shifts and differences tell lots of little stories.

		Unlike most Latin words they have no earlier (Protoindoeuropean) source.
		It was originally 'quaerere' (= to search), and designated a search for facts rather than things.

		Eastern music is based on a different palette (to mix metaphors) made up of different collections of notes organized not by ordered blocks but by meticulous melodies and rules (in the middle east "maqams").
		If you're used to one or the other the new music sounds as alien and exotic as speech from a different language family from most western tongues (protoindoeuropean).
		Give it some time and you can grow to like it.

		I can point you to degreed linguists (not translators or people who speak several languages, but language scientists) who say the 'Protoworld' and 'Nostratic' language theories cannot be proven.
