Interview with Anime News Network/Protoculture Addicts.  DVD Vision Japan
I've been working on Anime News Network since May 2000, it was originally just a hobby that I had intended to put 10-15 hours a week into, but it grew really fast (300% in year one, 200% every year since) and it became too time consuming to do part time.
Anime News is what I do, so me writing it up in an editorialized and collated format for the magazine is only logical.
Anime will probably be more mainstream, but it has a tough test to pass first.

Robotech Masters - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Their imperial machinations lead them to turn their cloned Zentraedi miners into a formidable military used to steal the Flower of Life from the Invid and conquer the Local Group of star systems.
With Zor's theft of the SDF-1 and the destruction of Dolza's fleet in the First Robotech War, the Masters were left critically short on protoculture and were forced to invade Earth in 2029 to reclaim the last remaining Protoculture Matrix, thus initiating the Second Robotech War.
The story in which the Robotech Masters appear in the Robotech universe is originally from the anime series The Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross, in which they were referred to as the Zor Supreme Commanders.

Robotech - Source Anime   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Anime (pronounced "annie-may") is animation (cartoons) drawn and produced in Japan.
The most important difference is the definition of "Protoculture." It is not an energy source; it is not some biochemical substance that allows for mecha transformation; it is not some quasi-mystical force playing games with the Universe; it is not a god.
The Protoculture were literally the "first culture" to evolve in the galaxy, circa 500,000 B.C. Approximately 499,000 years ago, a Protoculture exploration vessel visited Terra and "exerted an influence" upon humanity's ancestors.

DVD Verdict Review - Robotech: The Protoculture Collection
The eighty-five episodes were actually three unrelated Japanese anime series cobbled together by producer Carl Macek and a team of writers.
It is the Star Wars of the anime world, and it opened the floodgates for the entire genre to invade America.
Guilty of blasting the anime craze into hyperdrive here in the U.S., Robotech remains a classic of the genre that is deserving of its reputation.

Review | Anime: A Guide to Japanese Animation
Japanese animation, otherwise known as anime, has become impossible to avoid: Pokemon, Digimon, Card Captors and Dragonball are on every channel, Princess Mononoke and Akira still run in repertory cinemas and you can't go to a video store without seeing shelves full of anime titles, half of which are rented out at any given time.
The fan culture which supported anime for decades has long relied on rumor and wishful thinking as much as fact, abetted by the fact that few of its proponents speak or read the original language.
The information presented will probably surprise many skeptics (anime has a much wider range than just science fiction and pornography) and true believers (a lot of anime has been quite derivative and aimed at kids) and the raw data give a good insight into general trends and the way the anime industry has evolved.

All books and comics written after the McKinney novelizations imply that protoculture is some sort of fluid that runs throughout the mecha (and the traces of it in the Zentraedi).
Most of the new mecha are powered by fusion reactors instead of Protoculture systems, due to the scarcity of Protoculture on Earth after the SDF-3 left.
Later versions of the Alpha carry what is known as a "shadow device", which allows them to not be seen on the Invid's protoculture sensors, and a "destabilizer", which allows the alpha to create holes in the force fields that surround invid hives.
