Protonotary apostolic originates with the protonotaries, or notaries, at the Vatican.
The protonotary apostolic supernumerary, the highest level of monsignor, also wears a fuchsia cape, or ferraiolo, which is draped over the left side of the chair, above, and shown in the center of the page.
