Most protopunkers are rock and roll performers of the 1960s and early-1970s, though some earlier performers have been cited.
Some protopunk bands also fall into the categories of glam rock or UK pub rock.
Remarkably, Pere Ubu falls into both the protopunk and post-punk categories, but their experimental, idiosyncratic music has rarely (if ever) been classified as "regulation" punk.

Protopunk is a term used to describe a number of performers who were important precursors of punk rock, or who have been cited by early punk rockers as influential.
Protopunk has proven difficult to define, and many widely different groups have been so dubbed.
Protopunk, combined with garage rock, hard-edged New Wave and the garage rock revival, helped lead the way to the modern garage punk movement.

Preceded by a variety of protopunk music of the 1960s and early 1970s, punk rock developed between 1974 and 1976 in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, where groups such as the Ramones and Sex Pistols were recognized as the vanguard of a new musical movement.
In contrast to the expansive utopianism of the late 1960s musical counterculture (which characterized much of rock during the era), bands now seen as protopunk tended toward minimalist, aggressive music and lyrics that often dealt with taboo subject matter.
These early bands operated within small "scenes", regional or entirely local, facilitated by enthusiastic impresarios who operated clubs or organized gigs in whatever venues were available—schools, garages, warehouses—advertising via locally printed flyers and fanzines.

The opener is a cover of the classic hit "Tutti-Frutti" by Little Richard, "Let Me Try" is a ballad, "The American Ruse" attacks what they see as a hypocritical idea of freedom that the American government teaches and "The Human Being Lawnmower" is an attack upon the Vietnam War.
The central focus of the album is the band's actual movement away from the raw, thrashy, protopunk sound pioneered and captured on their first release Kick Out the Jams.
This was due impart to producer Jon Landau's distaste for the rough psychedelic movement, and adoration for the straight-forward, commercial rock of the 1950s.

 ECHO VI/2: Waksman 1
Although metal/punk crossover is typically considered a distinctly 1980s phenomenon, bands that fused elements of the two genres were, if not plentiful, certainly in evidence in the preceding decade.
Even early protopunk bands such as the New York Dolls or the Stooges can be considered to have significantly mixed generic elements in both music and the broader meanings that circulated around them, and such bands have often been accorded a place of prominence in written accounts of both metal and punk.
By the mid-1970s, the period widely recognized as the moment of punk’s preeminence, a number of bands straddled the metal/punk divide even as punk was becoming defined as a more discretely bounded—and at times ideologically stringent—phenomenon.

The real purpose of what jaguaro.org were doing with this was to basically try to “purify” people’s thinking about music by reducing it to an ethos of working class purity that excludes overt acquired tastes and forbids cerebral lyrics or compositional complexity or virtuosity absolutely.
If the writers were (as has been mistakenly said) trying to attack the most critically favoured artists, they would have filled the top thirty spots with protopunk (“Funhouse”, “Kick Out The Jams”, “New York Dolls”) and late 1970s punk (“Never Mind The Bollocks”, “Horses”, “The Clash”, “Ramones”, “Unknown Pleasures”, “Wild Gift” etc. etc.).
However, because the punk rockers are saints to these people, it would be an equivalent blasphemy to include any punk album to a Muslim criticising the contnts of the Qur’an.

The Stooges sold rather few records in their original existence and often performed for indifferent or hostile audiences.
Nevertheless, The Stooges are often regarded as hugely influential both on the then-nascent heavy metal, and on punk rock (see protopunk).
Singer Iggy Pop and his wild onstage antics were often the focus of attention.

The three bands featured provide a contrast in style almost as telling as the diverging paths they would take after the film's 1977 release.
The Dead Boys, originally from Cleveland, crash and burn through songs such as "Sonic Reducer" with a self-destructive frenzy copped in large part from protopunk band Iggy and the Stooges but taken to unimagined extremes both onstage and off (where violence-riddled heroin addiction eventually destroyed the band).
Blondie, shown here playing "In the Flesh" and "Rifle Range," imbue their songs with a flickering, edgy, and strangely glamorous light, a quality (aided by the drop-dead beauty of their lead singer, Debbie Harry) that would catapult them to worldwide (albeit fleeting) fame and riches by the late 1970s.

After years of ignoring punk rock, the 600 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation appeared to be making amends by finally inducting three legends of the genre -- the Ramones, the Clash and the Sex Pistols -- in quick succession.

At this point, it's hard not to suspect an anti-Stooges bias among some of the voting body.

Ironically, as the UK punk scene and LA hardcore scenes were taking off, Jonathan was nowhere to be found, as he transformed himself into a 50s-ish folk rocker, a cult antihero of sorts.
