Protoss Carrier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Carriers are the capital ships of the mighty Protoss fleet.
In Ressurection IV, a Protoss ship that may be a carrier is seen firing an immensely powerful beam from its underside as a planetary bombardment weapon, burning the surface of Braxis.
Rumors indicate that the weapon fired used by the carriers on those instances was planned to be included in the game as a counterpart to the Terran Battlecruiser's Yamato Cannon, but later, this idea was scrapped due to the power given to the Protoss in the form of Psionic Storm.

 Carriers suck
Carriers are very expensive and in a tight game simply converting to carriers will cause the terran to push farther and farther.
Carriers is the payback for overranged tanks, overfastened vults and stupid probes having their lifes taken out in 1 siege blow, lets not forget mines that never explode damageless unlike scarabs.
Obviously if terran is owning, protoss won't have the cash or the balls to get carriers, and if the protoss is owning, he probably can win without them, but in an well-mathched game, when protoss gets carriers terran chances diminish tenfold.

Being the sole mobile protoss detection, these units are critical unless you like being victimized by cloaked units.
With 8 corsair, a protoss can rape an opposing zerg's overlord population, all the while hydralisks and defending colonies are powerless to fire back.
Carriers - While the carrier is arguably the toughest unit in the game, it is also the most spendy, tallying in at 550 mineral and 250 gas once loaded, (you will have to work hard on a real map to make the numbers pay for themselves).

THE PROTOSS This sleek and aristocratic elder race in Starcraft are the antithesis of the cheap and grasping Zerg swarms.
The relatively compact Protoss armies make them a more manageable race to play, though their spellcasters' powers of deception and infiltration open up a vast range of subtle and, frankly, despicable ploys to the Protoss player.
Carriers should obliterate the enemy from maximum range, and you should prioritise targets who can still fire at you from that distance.

 Terran Strategies
Because the protoss rushed cannons they won't have many gateways(probably 3, no more_ and their force will not be large enough to take down your tanks, vultures and marines(the more cannons they built, the less likely they can stop you.
Against protoss the main line is that a protoss use Dark Templar/Reaver drop to slow down the terran's economy, allowing them to capture more bases and get an advantage at their ground force that's just enough to stop terran pshing them to death and get carriers.
When protoss wants to turtle terran siege out of their range and hit them and protoss is forced to charge into tank/vulture fire.

Protoss are especially hard pressed to bust a terran choke until they get corsairs, and zerg have to tech to guardians or defilers.
If you are careful to eradicate ALL of a protoss's observers, they CAN be good against carriers, but you will be hard pressed to spot the little wretches amidst a mass of swirling interceptors.
They cannot be "danced" like carriers, their spell casting ability is of limited utility, and they WILL be massacred by spell castors.

He will keep your Carriers cloaked against all but detector units, and as you are able to safely get him over a clearing on the enemy base, he can also do a Recall on the first group of 12 Zealots that you have grouped and speed keyed back at your base.
For targeting, have the Carriers first attack the defensive units: The Terran Towers, the Zerg Spore Colonies, the Protoss Photon Cannons and then the observer units such as the Overlords.

Protoss also have arguably the best air force in the game.
Otherwise, let your Carriers do their work from as long range as possible, where they are less susceptible to enemy fire.

The Protoss enjoy a new air unit called the Corsair.
The Corsair makes it absolutely essential that you have decent defences within your base perimeter, because if you think you're going to hold the Protoss back with three rows of turrets, you may be in for a nasty surprise.

In the expansion, the tides turned quickly against terrans, i think both zerg and protoss are better than terrans in the expansion, although medics are good, they aren't that good.
Ghosts are usefull against protoss because they can lockdown all of the protoss units except the Zealot and Archon (I play original so Dark Templar and Dark Archon to not apply to my strategy).

But Protoss is well equipped to take Zerg, Zerg is well equipped to take Terran, and Terran is well equipped to take Protoss.
And since the Protoss really only has 1 unit that can attack underneath the Dark Swarm (Zealot) then Ultra/ling is pure owning on the Zerg part.
After about 20 minutes the Protoss is pretty much dead as long as the Zerg Expanded as nessacery and whatnot.

It's a little far fetched but what if a dark protoss faction on some planet was seperated from the other factions of the protoss by zerg attacks on a nearby planet, the zerg didn't notice the protoss, but moved along destroying all the protoss planets, effectively cutting the protoss off.

So, early in the game, the Protoss are at a disadvantage to their opponents.
The most fearsome enemy any StarCraft player can see is a force of twelve Protoss carriers descending on his base (or even worse: twelve stealth carriers via the arbiter unit!) Almost no amount of defensive planning can stop a carefully planned twelve-carrier assault.

Marc P. I still beg to differ on the protoss- if a swarm of carriers strike a well defended zerg town, they'll run into a smattering of devourers (brood war), a number of spore colonies, and masses of hydralisk.
12 carriers would easily fall to 36-38 hydralisks, simply because there are too many of them to target while the hydralisks systematically take out the interceptors, until only the carriers are left fleeing for cover.
