 protozoan - HighBeam Encyclopedia
protozoan, informal term for the unicellular heterotrophs of the kingdom Protista.
Protozoans comprise a large, diverse assortment of microscopic or near-microscopic organisms that live as single cells or in simple colonies and that show no differentiation into tissues.
Organelles, or intracellular structures, carry out a variety of functions, such as digestion, excretion, respiration, and coordination of movement; some protozoans are much more complex in their internal structure than are the cells of multicellular animals.

 Diameter of a Protozoan
In the blood, the protozoan multiplies and causes septicemia (blood infection) and fevers as the host immune system responds and attempts to kill the pathogen.
Spread is by infected mosquitoes, where the protozoan resides in the salivary glands of the bug.
Upon biting a host, the protozoan enters the circulation where it alternates between infecting and lysing red blood cells and liver hepatocytes.

Anaerobic Biodegradation in Contaminated Aquifers: Inlfuence of Protozoan Predation and Iron Bioavailability
To evaluate the effect of protozoan predation on aerobic biodegradation rates, a sediment extract was fed a mixture of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene isomers (BTEX); and the extract then was incubated aerobically with and without protozoan inhibitors.
The effect of protozoan predation on anaerobic biodegradation rates was evaluated in macrocosms (1 kg sediment and 600 mL liquid) that were repeatedly fed benzaldehyde over a 1000-hour period.
In macrocosms containing the protozoan inhibitor cycloheximide, the number of total anaerobes and iron reducers was higher than in macrocosms that did not receive the inhibitor.

Protozoan - by Jacob Eapen   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
The word protozoa means "any of the singled-cell, usually microscopic organisms of the phylum or subkingdom Protozoa, which includes the most primitive forms of animal life." Protozoan comes from the New Latin word Protozoa which was formed by the word proto, which means first, and zoan which means animal.
Some of the locomotive structures protozoans have are pseudopods, cilia, and flagella.
Protozoans can be useful and not useful for man. Some cause disease, others do not harm man, and others feed on dead plants and other small protozoans, helping to continue the food chain.

The second portion of VPARA 5333 is concerned with those protozoan organisms that infect man and animals.
Unlike amoebae that require a substrate on which to move, flagellates are well adapted to liquid medium and thus are found in blood, lymph, cerebrospinal fluid, etch of the hosts that they infect.
Some species have developed a parasitic mode of existence in various tissues and organs of animals and it is these that we will discuss in the next section.

Protozoan Disease : by Ray Sahelian, M.D. natural treatment
More than 70 species of protozoan and helminth parasites can reach humans by food and water.
However, massive but unseen amounts of feces from humans, their pets, and their domesticated animals are discharged, dumped, or carried in runoff, bringing encysted zoonotic protozoan parasites to estuaries and coastal waters.
Here, they contaminate bathing beaches, are filtered and concentrated by shellfish eaten by humans and marine mammals, and infect a wide range of marine animal hosts.

EPA Protozoan Method Development Stakeholder Meeting - December 16, 1997
EPA held a public meeting on December 16, 1997, in Washington, D.C., to discuss drinking water protozoan analytical methods.
EPA presented an overview of how ongoing EPA drinking water activities and the Protozoan Method Development meetings, in particular, relate to the 1996 Amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act.
As mentioned earlier, the ICR method has a number of limitations (i.e., low recovery efficiencies, precision, accuracy and wide intra- and inter-laboratory variability) and is therefore not believed to be an adequate method to determine necessary treatment levels.

 Vectors of Protozoan Parasites
Vector transmission is the other strategy used by protozoan parasites which inhabit the blood or internal tissues within its host.
Two routes have been proposed: 1) the classical route in which the parasite 'backtracks' through the digestive system and migrates up the salivary duct, or 2) the direct route in which the parasite penetrates the peritrophic membrane and gut epithelium to gain access to the hemolymph.
Either route presents barriers and illustrates the complex interactions between the protozoan parasite and vector (Figure).

 Leishmaniasis
The sandfly is referred to as the disease vector, simply meaning that the infectious agent (the protozoan) is carried by the sandfly and passed on to other animals or humans in whom the protozoan will set up residence and cause disease.
The animal or human in which the protozoan then resides is referred to as the host.
Once the protozoan is within the human host, the human's immune system is activated to try to combat the invader.

 Protozoan Classification
Although the protozoans used to be lumped into four groups based on their type of locomotion (i.e., whether they are propelled by flagella, cilia, pseudopodia or those forms that lack locomotor organelles), the Society of Protozoologists published a classification of the protozoa in 1980 that recognizes seven phyla.
More recently, evidence from ribosomal RNA has once again challenged our concepts of the phylogenetic relationships among protozoan groups and has forced a revision in protozoan classification.
Accordingly, this website will avoid the issue of protozoan taxonomy and discuss these organisms under the traditional four informal headings: flagellates, amebas and their relatives, ciliates and parasitic apicomplexans that lack locomotor organelles.
