Proverb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A proverb (from the Latin proverbium) is a saying popularly known and repeated, usually expressing simply and concretely, though often metaphorically, a truth based on common sense or the practical experience of mankind.
Proverbs are often borrowed from different languages and cultures, and sometimes come down to the present through more than one language.
Further typical features of the proverb are its shortness (average: seven words), and the fact that its author is generally unknown (otherwise it would be a quotation).

 Popular Views of the Proverb
A proverb is a phrase or sentence, accepted and integrated into common verbal usage of the general population, although often regional in character, which is most likely generated by astute, humanistic, albeit didactic, assessment of the human experience, offering tidbits of wisdom applicable to these pradigms of existential encounter.
A proverb is a sentence or phrase which expresses the generally accepted thought or belief of a group and which has, through use, become of a group and which has, through use, become standardized in form.
Proverbs and their wisdom confront us daily, and modern people seem to have a clear idea of what proverbs are, what they express and what they can do for us.

This is a very simple proverb among many which encourages young men and women alike to learn and respect the honored ways of the family and the community and not to be tempted to adopt foreign ethical values which have not been tried by the family and the community.
Ga Proverbs such as these two proverbs on "Brotherhood and Sisterhood" in particular are a key to understanding life and are an important way of understanding the Ga people and their culture.

 Salon | Sharps and Flats
With "Proverb," an erstwhile collaboration with Michael Tilson Thomas appears to have been replaced by a new partnership with Paul Hillier, who conducted the premiere performances of "The Cave" last year.
Scored for three sopranos, two tenors, two vibraphones and two electric organs, "Proverb" is a spectacular piece, devoid of the pedantry of some of Reich's earlier vocal music, which sometimes relied too heavily on sampling.
Although it is mostly meant as filler, "Nagoya Marimbas" is reminiscent of the percussive works of the 1960s, and as such is a pleasant reminder of the sheer vitality of so much of Reich's music.

The African Proverbs Project was designed to promote collection, publication and study of African proverbs with particular attention to their relationship to Christian mission, their role in modern Africa and their significance for a number of academic disciplines.
The members were chosen not because of a deep specialist interest in proverbs but because they all see the significance of proverbs in their broader fields and they all have a broad range of contacts through different networks.
The complexity and depth of proverbs is one of the reasons they are neglected--researchers know that one cannot base a sound argument on any single proverb without a fairly comprehensive knowledge of the whole proverbial store of a given language.

"THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE": AN AMERICAN PROVERB OF DISCONTENT   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
While the idea of the two proverbs is clearly similar, it is certainly questionable to consider the "grass" text as a variant of the earlier proverb.
There is the proverb "Hills are (look) green (blue) far away" that was recorded as early as 1887 and continues to be in use in a number of variants to the present day.
The relatively new American proverb of the grass being always greener on the other side of the fence does express a universally experienced human character trait, and it is for this reason that it caught on so quickly after its first appearance in a popular song from 1924.
