The Providence Steamrollers and the birth of professional basketball
Pieri, who was also the general manager of the Providence Reds, a professional hockey team in the old AHL, paid the $10,000 per team fee to help start the league and arranged for his team to play their games at the Rhode Island Auditorium, popularly referred to as the Arena, on North Main Street.
Providence was one of eight pillars that held the league together in the 1947-1948 season.

When checking line center Marquis Mathieu banged in Providence's third goal at 13:18 of the second period, P-Bruins fans were ready to celebrate the first Calder Cup for the city of Providence since the Providence Reds won it 43 years ago.

In 1961-62 Leach split his playing time between Boston and the Providence Reds of the AHL before he was relegated to the minors for the remainder of his career.
In 1952-53 he was a solid addition to the Detroit Red Wings' blueline and was on hand when the club lost to the Boston Bruins in the semifinals.

The Providence (R.I.) Journal reported on Wednesday the passing of former American Hockey League all-star forward Paul Larivee.
Larivee spent 10 seasons in the AHL with the Providence Reds from 1952-62, recording 539 points (217 goals, 322 assists) in 570 games.
A former team captain of the Reds, Larivee was a member of the organization's Hall of Fame and of the Rhode Island Reds Heritage Society.

December 7, 2006 - The American Hockey League is mourning the death of George M. Sage, former owner of the AHL’s Providence Reds.
Sage served as owner, chairman and president of the Reds between 1969 and 1976, and was a long-time member of the AHL’s Board of Governors, including honorary membership on the board for the last three decades.
In 1972, he helped open the Providence Civic Center, now known as the Dunkin’ Donuts Center and home to the AHL’s Providence Bruins.
