Providence, Rhode Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During this period, Providence's population had exceeded 4,300 citizens by 1776, and Providence was able to avoid occupation by British soldiers during the American Revolutionary War, though the city did suffer major interruptions in education and trade as a result of its location and facility as quarters for many troops passing through the area.
Providence was one of the first cities to industrialize in the U.S. By 1830, the city had manufacturing industries in metals, machinery, textiles, jewelry, and silverware.
Providence was formerly home to two major league franchises: the NFL's Providence Steam Roller in the 1920s and 1930s, and the NBA's Providence Steamrollers in the 1940s.

Providence was the first NFL team to play its home games in a bicycle racing stadium; first to host an NFL game at night under floodlights; and the first to play four regular-season games in six days.
The Steam Roller's home field was the 10,000 seat Cyclodome, which had been built in 1925 by a sports promoter and part-owner of the team, Pete Laudati.

Far from being an untested expansion team, the Steam Roller was an established club that had been beating strong opponents in the Northeast for several years; and the 1924 squad was its best yet, playing a tougher schedule that included six games with NFL teams.
In fact, the Steam Roller proved their mettle by holding Frankford scoreless for the rest of the afternoon and battling back with 10 points of their own, on a field goal by Colllins and a fumble return by Bull Lowe.
The 1924 Steam Roller didn't leave much of a statistical record, but Dutch Collins was the leading scorer, with 46 points in 14 games (not including those first two against patsy teams).
