It was a combination of the Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball League.
The six remaining NBL franchises—Anderson (IN) Packers, Denver Nuggets, Indianapolis Olympians, Sheboygan (WI) Redskins, Syracuse Nationals, Tri-Cities Blackhawks and Waterloo (IA) Hawks—join along with the new Indianapolis Olympians; the BAA becomes the National Basketball Association; Providence Steamrollers and Indianapolis Jets drop out (17-teams, 3 divisions).

Pieri, who was also the general manager of the Providence Reds, a professional hockey team in the old AHL, paid the $10,000 per team fee to help start the league and arranged for his team to play their games at the Rhode Island Auditorium, popularly referred to as the Arena, on North Main Street.
Providence was one of eight pillars that held the league together in the 1947-1948 season.
