Provideniya was founded in the 1930s, to serve as the easternmost port on the Northern Sea Route.
Provideniya’s airport is located in the settlement of Ureliki, on the far shore of the bay from the community of Provideniya.
Provideniya Region’s economy is based on traditional indigenous hunting, fishing and reindeer husbandry — in early 2002, there were 1,202 head of reindeer in the region.

The goal of this social organisation is to unite the ethnic population living in the Chukchi Autonomous Province, in various cities of the Russian Federation and abroad, and to persevere their culture, language and traditional way of life.
Since we could not agree with such a position, we held a Yupik assembly on August 5th, 2000 at Provideniya, and ratified the Constitution, which was passed in February 2000.

The consideration for application for scheduled service to Anadyr, Provideniya and Lavrentiya across the Bering Strait from Alaska and Chukotka triggered a press release from Alaska Gov. Tony Knowles and Chukotka Gov. Roman Abromovich on April 20.
According to Rowe, the population of Provideniya has dropped from 20,000 to between 3,000 and 4,000 and the town of Ureleki, where the airport is located, on the east side of Provideniya Bay is uninhabited.
Rowe's Bering Air, which has operated for 13 years over the strait to Provideniya, Anadyr, Pevek and other remote destinations, was picked because of its success at obtaining Russian permits for charter flights between the two continents, according to Jeff Berliner, Russian Far East trade specialist for the state Department of Community and Economic Development.
