He arrived in Avalon in July and, although his stay was short, it was long enough, apparently, to convince him of the urgent need to give close attention to his Newfoundland interests.
The prizes, incidentally were the cause of a dispute between himself and the English merchants whose ships had assisted in the seizure, a dispute in which Baltimore with characteristic shrewdness sought to strengthen his case by having his letters of marque antedated.
In 1632, he was given the territory north of the Potomac River which became the province of Maryland, but he died before receiving the charter for Maryland which was granted to his son, Cecil.

Calvert called his province Avalon, in honour of St. Joseph, of Arimathea, and his own town Verulam, in honour of St. Alban.
Lord Baltimore,* it is said, was a convert to the Roman Catholic religion, and having relinquished his situation at court, turned his attention to the establishment of the Colony of Maryland.

Avalon is the area near the community of Glastonbury in Somersetshire where Joseph of Arimathea is said to have preached the gospel in England for the first time.
Stock hoped that the Colony of Avalon would not only be a place where Christianity would be preached but also a gateway to other missions in America and in the Far East.
If we see how lenient the charter of Avalon was in comparison with that of John Guy, it becomes clear that even if Calvert had no Roman Catholic settlement in mind when he drafted the charter, later on it was so much easier for Roman Catholics to come and live in Newfoundland.

The Burin Peninsula of southeastern Newfoundland forms part of the Avalon Zone, one of four major tectonostratigraphic subdivisions of the Appalachian Orogen in the Province.
The Avalon zone was originally part of Gondwana, a continental plate that included parts of Europe and Africa.
The geology of the Avalon zone records the effect of Late Precambrian and Early Palaeozoic Appalachian Orogeny which has been linked to the generation and destruction of the ancient Iapetus Ocean (H. Williams, 1979).

With the coming of spring she begged her husband to send her to a kindlier climate so she was embarked with the younger children for Jamestown, Virginia.
An investment of between 20,000 pounds and 30,000 pounds, was lost when plans for the province of Avalon were given up.
In 1638 Sir David Kirke, who had captured Quebec from the French, took over Ferryland and the province of Avalon on a patent from his close friend, Charles I. The Calverts brought a suit against Kirke who was recalled to England during the Interregnum of Oliver Cromwell to answer charges.

In 1613 he was one of the committee sent to Ireland to examine into the grievances of the Catholics, and for his good offices he was, in 1625, raised to the Irish peerage as Baron Baltimore of Baltimore (Gaelic: Baile Tigh Mor, town of the big house), in County Cork.
In 1627 he visited a plantation in Newfoundland, later the Province of Avalon, which he had purchased in 1620, and established a colony there.
About 1628 he obtained land in northern Virginia (the present Maryland), but died before the charter was granted.

Calvert's zeal for American colonization was foreshadowed early in his career when he became a member of both the Virginia and the New England companies.
In 1621 he purchased lands in Newfoundland, where he soon planted a settlement, later erected by royal patent into the province of Avalon.
He twice visited the colony, but in 1629 the severe climate drove him to ask for lands farther south.
