The province of Belluno, located in the Northern part of Veneto Region extends on a land area of some 368 thousand hectares, of which 2% is classified as crops, 20% as meadows and pastures, 46% as forest land and 31% as other type land.
The economy of the Province relies mainly on the small industry, which in 1995 contributed 33% to the Province Gross Revenue and employed 34% of the labour force, and tourism, which contributed 22% to the Gross Revenue and employed 7% of the labour force.
The Belluno Province represents an interesting case study for the purposes of the project; its territory is completely located in a mountain area and as much as 70% of the Provincial GDP is produced in the rural areas, where economic activities are well integrated.
