To the north of Chieti is the octagonal church of S. Maria del Tricaglio, erected in 1317, which is said (without reason) to stand upon the site of a temple of Diana.
Under the Lombards Chieti formed part of the duchy of Benevento; it was destroyed by Pippin in 801, but was soon rebuilt and became the seat of a count.

The province of Chieti was called "Citeriore" since it was situated to the right of the Pescara river and was in Latin "citra" (=this side) with reference to Naples, the capital of the Kingdom.
With the institution of the Province of Pescara, in 1927, a number of communes previously belonging to the province of Chieti changed province, notably: Caramanico, Musellaro, Roccacaramanico, Salle, Sant'Eufemia a Maiella, Pescara, Manoppello, Lettomanoppello, Serramonacesca, Turrivalignani, San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore, Abbateggio, Bolognano, Roccamorice, Tocco di Casauria.

The city of Chieti rises up on the right hand side of the Pescara river, fifteen miles from the sea, on a narrow ridge running alongside the river, as does its straight and flat main street, corso Marrucino, the urban stretch of the Via Valeria.
Its province includes the eastern and southern slopes of the calcareous massif of the Maiella with its ramifications between Sangro and Aventino, and the sub-Apennine region furrowed out by the middle and lower Sangro, and by smaller water courses.
