  Hejaz - LoveToKnow 1911
HEJAZ (HIJAz), a Turkish vilayet and a province of Western Arabia, extending along the Red Sea coast from the head of the Gulf of Akaba in 29° 30' N. to the south of Taif in 20° N. It is bounded N. by Syria, E. by the Nafud desert and by Nejd and S. by Asir.
The name Hejaz, which signifies "separating," is sometimes limited to the region extending from Medina in the north to Taif in the south, which separates the island province of Nejd from the Tehama (Tihama) or coastal district, but most authorities, both Arab and European, define it in the wider sense.
Hejaz, together with the other provinces of Arabia which on the overthrow of the Bagdad Caliphate in 1258 had fallen under Egyptian domination, became by the conquest of Egypt in 1517 a dependency of the Ottoman empire.

Their patrimonial estates were stretched along the Rhine, or scattered in the provinces; but this ample domain was alienated by the imprudence or distress of successive princes; and their revenue, from minute and vexatious prerogative, was scarcely sufficient for the maintenance of their household.
The empire of Charlemagne and Otho was distributed among the dukes of the nations or provinces, the counts of the smaller districts, and the margraves of the marches or frontiers, who all united the civil and military authority as it had been delegated to the lieutenants of the first Cæsars.
In every province, the visible presence of the duke or count was interposed between the throne and the nobles; the subjects of the law became the vassals of a private chief; and the standard which he received from his sovereign, was often raised against him in the field.

Should this and Province of Hejaz be merged?
From a map, I get the assumption that Hejaz is actually in west of Saudi Arabia, not its northwest (try to find Jeddah and Makkah).
I don't think that Hejaz should be merged with, or put under Saudi Arabia or Western Saudi Arabian Provinces, because it is a historical entity, and it would be more confusing becuase the modern Saudi western provinces do not reflect the borders of the Hijaz in say, 1924.
