		In 1663 the charter was revised slightly, with the northward boundary extended to 36 degrees 30 minutes north to include the lands of settlers along the Albemarle Sound who had left the Virginia Colony.
		That, coupled with the outbreak of war with the Tuscarora and the inability of the Lords Proprietor to act decisively, led to separate governments for North and South Carolina.
		Some take this period as the establishment of separate colonies, but that did not officially occur until 1729, when seven of the Lords Proprietor sold their interests in Carolina to the Crown and both North Carolina and South Carolina became royal colonies.

		Samples taken from the limb and hinge regions of a gently plunging, asymmetric, tight, mesoscale fold in the Erwin formation of the Blue Ridge in North Carolina were analyzed to determine the deformation mechanisms and strains associated with the folding event.
		The magnitude and orientation of the grain shape ellipsoids calculated for the North Carolina fold indicate that the rocks located in the overturned limb were originally located in the hinge of the fold.
		Geologic mapping in the Blue Ridge province of northwestern Ashe County, North Carolina reveals that Grenvillian basement rock is overlain by a sequence of Late Proterozoic metavolcanic and metasedimentary rock.
