Estimates of depth to ground water in North Carolina are useful in assessing the vulnerability of public drinking-water supplies to contamination at or near land surface.
Because the ground-water system in the Piedmont and Blue Ridge Provinces consists of fractured crystalline rock overlain by regolith, measurements of depth to water in shallow fractured rock are considered to represent the water table.
In the Piedmont Province, land-surface altitude, slope, and average annual precipitation accounted for about 33 percent of variation in the data; distance to the nearest stream, soil thickness, and soil permeability did not account for significant variation in depth to water.

The "War of the Regulators" has taught mankind that oppression, misrule, and extortion tinder any government tends to weaken and ultimately destroy the power of the oppressor; and that a people united in the cause of freedom and their inalienable rights are invincible by those who would enslave them.
But it is unnecessary to further recount the outrages inflicted upon a suffering people and we have scarcely begun to enumerate their deeds of wrong-doing for enough has already been given to show that the people had cause for every step they took, and no one will be inclined to say them nay.
The people of' North Carolina will ever feel a keen interest in the life and tragic end of Capt. Benjamin Merrill, This interest is heightened when they call to remembrance the dark, stormy days and years which preceded the Revolutionary Warp and his espousal of the cause of liberty.
