In Italy, a province (in Italian: provincia) is an administrative division of an intermediate level between municipality (comune) and region (regione).
A provincia is composed of many comuni (pl), and usually several province (pl) form a region (with the exception of the region of the Aosta Valley, which, strictly speaking, has none, the administrative functions of a province being provided by the regione.
As of 2006, there are 110 provinces of Italy, three of which will be wholly effective in 2009.

Campania: Province of Avellino; the initial area severely infected at Baiano (1943) has spread to the western side of the province and small areas are to be found in the adjoining provinces of Benevento, Caserta, Naples (1947) and Salerno (1948) on the borders of the province of Avellino (1947).
In the province of Pavia the infected area of Cilavegna is very interesting because the chestnut trees existing there form a small group of old trees quite isolated from any other chestnut grove.

First, the delicate situation in Venezia Giulia required that Allied Forces be disposed semi-operationally and be capable of deployment on short notice; since the narrow Allied zone in Venezia Giulia did not allow sufficient depth for this purpose, retention of full military control in the adjoining province of Udine was essential.
The delicacy of the issue was apparent to AMG at an early stage and in consequence military government planning for Venezia Giulia was separated from the planning for northern Italy in general.

The Lagoon of Venice as a Ramsar Site
The Province of Venice commissioned Dr. Maria Jose Viñals Blasco of the University of Valencia (Spain) and Dr. Michael Smart (Gloucester, Great Britain), for many years Director of the Ramsar Convention Bureau, to develop viable guidelines for a future management plan of the Lagoon of Venice under the Ramsar Convention.
In 1999 the Province organized a seminar entitled "Towards integrated management of the Ecosystem of the Venice Lagoon", with participation of local people and interested organizations, experts on the ecology of the Lagoon and international participation.
At the seminars organized by the Province in 1999 and 2003, many Communes were represented, often by their Mayor, who expressed a large measure of agreement on the proposal to conserve and restore the natural values and functions of the Lagoon, so that people living in the Communes could maintain their lifestyle and livelihoods.

Cucina Italiana: Venetia - Rovigo and the Polesine
The province corresponds with the area called Polesine (a name deriving from the medieval Latin 'policinum' signifying a marshy area), one which is completely flat, formed in recent times by the accumulation of fluvial silts deposited amongst the lower reaches of the Adige and the Po rivers.
The Polesine has well defined limits, except in the north east where the area of Cavarzere forms part of the province of Venezia, and in the west where the boundary with the province of Verona in the Valli Grandi Veronesi is uncertain.
The cuisine of Rovigo and its province is very delicious and genuine, somewhat simple owing to being confined to farm products with few specialities but open to various external provincial influences, in particular that of the area of Ferrara.

The issue of Venezia Giulia, together with the question, herein treated, of other northeastern frontier areas such as Bolzano, highlights the extent to which planning for northern Italy also had to concern itself with the objective of maintaining AMG in areas of international dispute until the peace treaty could settle matters.
The South Tyrolean provinces of Belluno, Trento, and Bolzano had been ceded by Austria to Italy as late as 1919, and when the Germans invaded Yugoslavia in World War II they annexed these provinces to the Reich.
The CLN of north Italy and its correspondent committees of National Liberation in the regions and provinces had prepared plans long in advance of liberation as to officers, economics, finance, in fact, on all of the problems which would confront the governmental authorities in the area.
