Trip 1 outlines the tectonic history of northern Virginia along an east-west transect from the Coastal Plain province to the Blue Ridge province, whereas the other field trips each focus on a specific province.
In the Piedmont province, Trip 7 focuses on a controversial terrane boundary, whereas Trip 5 crosses several lithologic belts with distinct thermotectonic histories that suggest terrane boundaries.
These trips focus on the tectonic history of northern Virginia (Trip 1), terraces of the Potomac River at Great Falls and cosmogenic isotope analysis to date the terraces and the incision history (Trip 6), and Tertiary lithology and paleontology of the Chesapeake Bay region (Trip 9).

Vasan Kesavan & Michael Stokes Paulsen, Is West Virginia Unconstitutional?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
When the Commonwealth of Virginia announced it was seceding from the Union, the northwestern corner of Virginia formed a rump government-in-exile, declared itself the lawful government of Virginia, and gave "Virginia's" consent to the creation of a new State of West Virginia consisting of essentially the same northwestern corner of old Virginia.
Congress and the Lincoln administration recognized the northwestern rump as the legitimate government of Virginia, and voted to admit West Virginia as a State.
This article takes on the odd but amazingly complicated (and occasionally interesting) constitutional question of whether West Virginia is legitimately a State of the Union or is instead an illegal, breakaway province of Virginia.

TIMING OF GRENVILLE-AGE MAGMATISM AND DEFORMATION, BLUE RIDGE PROVINCE, CENTRAL VIRGINIA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
New geologic mapping, petrologic studies, and SHRIMP U-Pb dating of zircons have established an initial framework for the timing of Grenville-age tectonic events in the Virginia Blue Ridge from Thornton Gap south to Wolftown.
Temporal calibration of these magmatic and deformation events indicates that Grenville-age orogenesis in the central Virginia Blue Ridge involved an extended interval characterized by episodic emplacement of compositionally distinct, largely granitic magmas punctuated by at least two periods of regional deformation.
These data underscore the episodic nature of orogenic processes associated with amalgamation of Rodinia and establish an initial basis for regional correlation with Mesoproterozoic tectonic events that occurred elsewhere along the Laurentian margin.
