United Provinces - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There was also a nation called the United Provinces of Central America, and a province of British India called the United Provinces of Agra and Awadh, which is now called Uttar Pradesh (Northern Province in Hindi), and still referred to as "UP", the same way the United Provinces were.
The United Provinces first tried to choose their own lord, and they asked the Duke of Anjou (sovereign from 1581-1583) to rule them.
However, the latter agreed to turn the United Provinces into a protectorate of England (Treaty of Nonsuch, 1585), and sent the Earl of Leicester as governor-general.

The chief natural features of the province are thus determined by the main streams, whose alluvial deposits first formed the central portion of the United Provinces; while the currents afterwards cut deep channels through the detritus they brought down from the ring of hills or uplands.
The political vicissitudes through which this tract of country passed in earlier times are described under INDIA: History.
Throughout the rest of the province of Agra, almost all of which was acquired between 1801 and 1803, temporary settlements are in force, usually for a term of thirty years, the revenue being assessed at one-half of the assets or estimated rental value.

1838 Intense famine in North-West Provinces (United Provinces) of India; 800,000 perished.
The native rulers of India seem to have made no effort to relieve the sufferings of their subjects in times of famine; and even down to 1866 the British government had no settled famine policy.

Indonesia - The United East India Company
The United Provinces of the Netherlands was, in a sense, the world's first modern state.
When the people of the small Banda archipelago south of the Malukus continued to sell nutmeg and mace to English merchants, the Dutch killed or deported virtually the entire population and repopulated the islands with VOC indentured servants and slaves who worked in the nutmeg groves.
However, the English East India Company, established in 1600, proved to be a tenacious competitor.

The Sikhs and Rajputs from the various battalions were transferred to units allocated to India whilst 1 Punjab received in their place, Punjabi Mussalmans previously serving in battalions going to India's Army.

An Agricultural Testament - Albert Howard - 14
It had been the custom till 1912 in the United Provinces to keep their scientific officers isolated from the practical side of agricultural improvement, and there were no clear ideas how the combined scientific and practical problems connected with cane cultivation should be tackled.
The outstanding feature of the agricultural year in the United Provinces is the rapidity with which the seasons change, and the wide variation in their character.
In 1910 the investigations on sugar-cane in Northern India were mainly concentrated in the United Provinces, where a considerable local industry was already in existence.

Lyster Dewey: HEMP 1913 USDA Yrbk of Ag
Northern India has been regarded by some writers as the home of the hemp plant, but it seems to have been unknown in any form in India before the eighth century, and it is now thought to have been introduced there first as a fiber plant.
Hemp, called "asa" in the Japanese language, is cultivated chiefly in the provinces or districts of Hiroshima, Tochigi, Shimane, Iwate, and Aidzu, and to a less extent in Hokushu (Hokkaido) in the north and Kiushu in the south.
The oldest cultivated fiber plant, one for which the conditions in the United States are as favorable as anywhere in the world, one which properly handled improves the land, and which yields one of the strongest and most durable fibers of commerce, is hemp.

Also, his portrayal of Muslim rule in India is somewhat biased, and he only describes the bad bits, such as the jizya and the pagan tyranny of Aurangzeb while glossing over the good bits during the reigns Emperors Akbar, Jehangir and all those chaps who tried to build bridges between Hindus and Muslims.
This history of India is eminently political, as the title proves it, since Nehru invites us to discover India, an entity that did not formaly exist yet.
His dreams and hopes for India as a forward looking, modern and tolerant nation fostering peace and co operation in the world are pretty well brought out in the book.

In 1579, although the struggle against Spain was far from over, the seven provinces signed the Union of Utrecht which declared them to be an independent federal state.
The United Provinces was then governed by peaceful and tolerant burghers of whom the most famous was the gifted and incorruptible John de Witt.
In theory, the seven provinces were equal, with each sending an equal number of representatives to the national assembly or States-General.

Amazon.ca: Books: From Movement to Government: The Congress in the United Provinces, 1937-42
Pocket-size text provides a detailed account of the Congress Ministry of 1937-39 in the United Provinces, and explores the internal dynamics of an organization performing the dual function of a government in power and a movement spearheading the anti-imperialist struggle.
Here the main themes discussed are: the attempts by Gandhi to bring cohesion to an organization that had become unwieldy and dispersed, the changing attitude of the leadership towards the War, the scope of individual satyagraha, and the specific situation that gave rise to the Quit India Movement.
Making extensive use of the police abstracts of intelligence prepared by the CID, which have seldom been used until now, and interviews with freedom fighters with a range of political leanings, this important book provides a fascinating account of a crucial phase in the Indian National Movement.
