The principal institutions of the Republic of Madagascar are a presidency, a parliament (National Assembly and Senate), a prime ministry and cabinet, and an independent judiciary.
Madagascar developed a recovery plan in collaboration with the private sector and donors and presented it at a "Friends of Madagascar" conference organized by the World Bank in Paris in July 2002.
Madagascar's sources of growth are tourism; textile and light manufacturing exports (notably through the EPZs); agricultural products (the country is the world's leading producer of vanilla, accounting for about half the world's export market); and mining.

The president of the senate, the president of the national assembly and the prime minister said in a statement that they did not accept the recount, which they said went against accords signed in the Senegalese capital of Dakar two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, the governor of the city of Tamatave said that four out of Madagascar's six provinces have declared themselves independent and will form a separate confederation to Antananarivo, which is currently run by Mr Ravalomanana.
The governor of the northern Antsiranana province has already indicated he plans to "declare independence" for the province, the French news agency AFP reported.

The outbreak has extended to 5 out of 6 provinces in Madagascar, the exception being Antsiranana province in the north-east of the country (see previous report).
Analysis by the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza in London, United Kingdom and the Institut Pasteur, Madagascar (National Influenza Centre) have shown that the circulating influenza virus is similar to A(H3N2) viruses (A/Panama/2007/99/(H3N2)) which have been circulating in the northern and southern hemispheres for several years.
The virus circulating in Madagascar is similar to those included in the current influenza vaccine and also in the vaccine for the coming influenza season in the northern hemisphere; these vaccines, therefore, protect against infection with this virus.

The Social Fund II project (1996-1999) was intended to provide supplemental financing to the Fonds d’Intervention pour le Developpement (FID) which had been active in the provinces of Anantanarivo and Toliary since 1993.
FID acquired the capacity to develop infrastructure sub-projects, income-generating activities and training sub-projects — this experience provided the foundation for the expansion of project activities to all six provinces in Madagascar under FID II.
The project was implemented more rapidly than had been estimated and closed an entire year before the original schedule.
