Provins was once one one of the cities putting on one of the biggest fairs in (A region of northeastern France) Champagne, when the city was under the protection of (Click link for more info and facts about Counts of Champagne) Counts of Champagne.
Provins is well-known for its medieval (Defensive structure consisting of walls or mounds built around a stronghold to strengthen it) fortifications, such as the Tour César (Caesar Tower).

In 1298 or 1299 Hagin, a Jewish resident of the town, was commissioned to deposit in the hands of the royal officials the proceeds of the taxes paid by his coreligionists of the bailiwick of Troyes.
A document of 1313 mentions the sale by Maitre Pierre d'Argemont, clerk, for the sum of 400 livres (Tours currency), of a house which had belonged to the Jews Josson de Coulommiers and his son Croissant, adjoining the enclosure of the chateau and surrounding the Jewish school.

The first written document mentioning the importance of Provins dates back to 802, when Charlemagne sent his "Missi Dominici" to the city (representatives of the king to supervise the administration).

Provins had its own currency, which was widely accepted.
