BBC - Movies - interview - Aishwarya Rai
Provoked is her latest English language film, in which she takes the role of Kiranjit Alhuwalia, a Punjabi housewife who killed her husband, but was subsequently freed by the British judicial system.
When the film was given a special screening at last year's Indian International Film Academy awards the Indian media suggested that it should be dubbed in other Indian languages and be seen across the different states.
Provoked deserves that platform, to be made accessible to a wider audience.

AISHWARYA-FOREVER [dot] COM - Queen of Bollywood turns into battered wife
Film director Jagmohun Mundhra yesterday rejected the accusation that he was turning the serious issue of domestic violence into “cheap entertainment” by casting an actress as glamorous as Aishwarya Rai as a battered housewife.
One suggestion is that Aishwarya could identify with the film’s theme of domestic violence because she had been slow to end her own much-talked-about and allegedly abusive relationship with her former boyfriend, Salman Khan.
The name of the film, Provoked, refers to the English “law on provocation”, which was softened, as a result of “Regina v Ahluwalia”, to take account of the abuse many women suffer in the period prior to the act of killing.

Interview with Julia Jentsch, In Film Australia
Hans Weingartner’s new film is the story of three politically conscious and attractive twenty-something Germans, who work mundane jobs by day, and break into the houses of the ridiculously wealthy at night.
Julia believes the film aims to “motivate people to think about what is going on in our society at the moment”, and that this is purpose behind the directors vision, as well offering a very entertaining viewing experience of course.
Weingartner shot the film entirely digitally on hand held cameras, and Julia describes this as a very liberating process, “it’s cheaper, and you have much more time” – cheaper for the filmmaker and easy for the cast on the set, as Weingartner was happy for them to do a lot of takes.

With argument over the film filling the papers and air waves, in May and June of 1985, the French High Authority on audio-visual communications convened a “Jury of Honor,” consisting of five surviving members of the Resistance (all non-communist, and including Raymond and Lucie Aubrac), to advise it on the advisability of broadcasting the film.
Unanimously, the jury voted that the allegations of the film were unproven and ultimately defamatory, “an operation of disinformation with obvious and shocking political intent.” Its members signed a statement declaring that, were they in charge of the network, they would not allow transmission of the film.
The film also attests to the importance of the socially marginal in the drama of occupation and resistance, as the widely-shared impression of social rupture enabled new actors and new actions.
