In 1766, the captain-general of São Paulo, D. Luís Antônio de Souza Mourão, appointed Antônio Corrêa Barbosa to be in charge of the foundation of a small village along the mouth of the Piracicaba river.
In 1877, as a suggestion of Prudente de Moraes, a town councilor at the time and later the first civil Presidente of Brazil, the name of the city was changed to Piracicaba.
Prudente de Moraes Museum An anciente Brazilian imperial style house, it was the home of the first civil president of Brazil.

Machine guns and large artillery pieces, such as mortars and howitzers, including a powerful Whitworth 32 (nicknamed “Matadeira”, or Killer, by the population) were added to the 3,000-man force and had to be hauled with enormous effort through the unforgiving landscape, lacking in roads.

Legend has it that there actually was ‘a girl from Ipanema.’ Supposedly, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes used to meet at a seaside bar in Ipanema to discuss music and poetry—there they would often see a beautiful young girl named Heloísa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto walking by on her way to the beach.
It sounds a lot like an audible example of Moraes’ comment: "the feeling of the youth that passes." In a way, her shortcomings are her strength.
