Moldavia west of Prutriver united with Wallachia in 1859 as the principality of Romania.
The parts of Moldavia situated East of Prut were occupied by Russia in 1812 and named Bessarabia; united with Romania in 1918; was reoccupied by the Soviet Union in 1940; recovered by Romania in 1941; reoccupied by the Soviet Union in 1944 and transformed into Moldavian SSR, and in 1991 declared independence as Moldova Republic.
Galati County is positioned in the east of Romania, on the inferior course of Siret and Prut, in the confluence zone with Danube.
The climatic regime specific to Galati County is a continental temperate type, with differences between the hill zone and the plain, due to the relief forms and the orientation of the hydrographic network.

This concerns the agreement with Romania of the 1960s on a 50-50% share of the water of the bordering PrutRiver and the former internal regulations between the Soviet republics.
Irrigation is mainly concentrated in the central and southern parts of the country, in the Dnestr and Prut valleys.

The Chernivtsi region is situated in the northwest of Ukraine on the foothills of the Carpathians along the Dniester and Prutrivers.
The regional center is the city of Chernivtsi, which covers the territory of about 15,300 hectares on both banks of the Prutriver and has the population of 258,200 people.
The Chernivtsi region is a favorable area for versatile summer and winter mountain sports tourism, mass educational and health improvement recreation, as well as balneological treatment.

Chern was built most probably under the rule of prince Yaroslav Osmomysl (1153-1187) to protect south-western borders of the Galician principality and to control a major trade route along the Prut.
The neighboring settlement of Lenkivtsi continued to exist on the left bank of the Prut.
In 1796, the town becomes the center of a district in the Duchy of Galicia, in 1849 -- the capital of the Duchy of Bukovina.

July 6-20, 1996: A water ecological expedition called "Prut 96", organized by the NGO called Association of Ecological Education and Information "Terra Nostra" was held down the Prutriver from the village of Lipkany to the village of Sculeni in the Ungheni region.
The goal of the expedition was to examine the Prutriver with the participation of students and post-graduates in order to attract attention of the population and state services towards the ecological problems of the river and the whole region.
At a length of 711 kilometres, the PrutRiver forms the border between Romania and Moldova.
In the framework of the cooperation, experts from Romanian Waters National Administration and from the Prut Directorate met at Chisinau in February 2004.

Elements of the 79th and 76th Infantry divisions and the 20th Panzergrenadier Division were actually on the west bank of the river but found themselves in a running battle with Polozkov's XVIII Tank Corps near Hsui.
Other German units trying to reach the Prut found their way blocked by the IV and VII Guards Mechanized corps, which had already occupied key crossroads and river crossings.
Although some gaps remained in the Soviet line guarding the PrutRiver, units of the IV Guards Mechanized Corps and the XVIII Tank Corps were able to link up, ensuring that most avenues of escape were effectively blocked.

Numerous archaeological traces have been discovered including defense works, burial places and religious cult constructions between the Dniester and the Prutrivers, dating back to as early as the 4th century B.C. The Hellenistic influence can also be traced in the material culture of the Gets and Dacians.
