Pryor Creek is a city located in Mayes County, Oklahoma.
Originally named Coo-Y-Yah, Cherokee for Huckleberry, it was renamed Pryor Creek, which was the name of the local railroad station (named, of course, for the creek).
Due to confusion in distinguishing handwritten mailing addresses to Pryor Creek and Pond Creek, the U.S. Postal Service name for the town was shortened to Pryor, though the official name of the town remains Pryor Creek.

Pryor was made sergeant in 1804, and led the First Squad of six privates.
Lewis and Clark considered Prior "a man of character and ability." In June, 1804 he presided over a court martial of privates John Collins and Hugh Hall, accused of theft of whiskey and drinking on duty; the men were found guilty and sentenced to a flogging.
Pryor Creek, Oklahoma and Pryor, Montana are named for him.

Oklahoma, the forty-sixth state to be admitted to the Union, is bounded on the north by Colorado and Kansas, on the east by Arkansas and Missouri, on the south by the Red River separating it from Texas, and on the west by Texas and New Mexico.
Of these lands the Oklahoma that was opened to settlement in 1889, by proclamation of the President of the United States, embraced 1,392,611 acres ceded by the Creeks, and 495,094 acres ceded by the Seminoles in 1866.
The last great opening in Oklahoma occurred in December, 1906, when 505,000 acres of land, which had been reserved from the Comanche and Apache lands for pasturage, were sold in tracts of 160 acres to the highest bidders by the Government.

It was in 1888 that Pryor Creek was first surveyed and platted under the laws of the Cherokee Nation by I.P. Bledsoe of Chouteau.
Under Cherokee law, Pryor Creek was in the COO-Wee-Scoo-Wee (White Eagle or Big Chief) District, but after the U.S. Government survey in September of 1902 it was place in the Fifth District of Indian Territory and made a court town.
Pryor Creek was incorporated under Cherokee Law about 1889, with the bill being introduced in the Cherokee Council House by Councilman D. Vann (the old white rock house on the road to Claremore was his home), and in the Senate by Sen. Sam H. Mayes of Pryor.

Nathaniel Pryor and Sam Houston conduct trade on a flatboat along the Three Forks, where the Neosho (Grand), Verdigris and Arkansas Rivers flow together.
Nathaniel Pryor (1775-1831) was an explorer, soldier, trader and Indian agent.
Sam Houston built a large log house in eastern Oklahoma, which became known as “Wigwam Neosho.” It was located “near the Neosho River, a little above Cantonment Gibson, and thirty miles from the lodge of Oo-loo-te-ka (the Cherokee father of his youth).” Here he engaged in trading, entertaining friends, and planting an apple orchard.

From February through July 1977, we sampled the fishes of Grand River (three locations on the river mainstream), Chouteau Creek (two locations), and Pryor Creek (two locations) in Mayes County, Oklahoma in order to assess the existing conditions of the food and sport fishery, and to determine the presence and relative abundance of nongame fishes.
We used "experimental" gill nets, 1.83 m × 30 m, with bar measure mesh grading 2.5-10.2 cm, at all mainstream and lower creek locations; upstream in the creeks gill nets with 2.5 and 10.2 cm bar measure mesh were set to span the stream.
Notropis camurus, considered rare in Oklahoma (7), was relatively common (59 adults from three gravel bar locations) in Grand River in our study area but absent from the creeks.

In 1968, their remains, along with those of an infant son, Daniel, and other relatives, were moved from the abandoned family cemetery and placed with Watie at the Polson Cemetery.
Watie, who was born in Georgia, became a leader of the relocated Cherokee Nation in the Oklahoma Territory and commanded the Confederate forces of the tribe during the Civil War, becoming the last Confederate general to surrender.
