The earliest legal regulation of the Jewish community at Przemysl was issued by King Sigismund August on March 20, 1559, and was signed by the highest civil and ecclesiastical authorities.
The Jews of Przemysl did not suffer during the Cossack disturbances of 1648 and 1649, when they took part in defending the city, as is reported by Nathan Hannover in his "Yewen Meẓulah," nor during the Polish-Swedish war, although the city was besieged twice.
Of historic interest is the reference to the physician Marcus Niger, who lived at Przemysl at the end of the sixteenth century, and enjoyed the special favor of the king.

General Hermann Kusmanek was the commander of the garrison stationed in the fortress of Przemysl at the beginning of World War I. The study of the fortress' siege and surrender has undergone con-siderable change.
As Przemysl straddled the river, it was therefore in the middle of the battleline and presented an Austrian bridgehead.
In this light, the struggle for Przemysl, the longest and perhaps greatest siege in WWI, was really for nought—the hundreds of thousands of killed and captured soldiers on each side fought for a symbol that had no substance whatsoever.

Przemysl is situated on the northern side of the Carpathian Mountains in Galicia and was one of several border cities that were fortified to protect the mountain passes leading over the mountains to the Hungarian plain.

After the death of Nicolaus the Bishop of Lebus again endeavoured to assert jurisdiction over Przemysl, but Gregory XI appointed Eric de Winsen (1377), who became the first actual bishop of Przemysl.
At present the Latin Diocese of Przemysl numbers 1,152,000 Catholics; 547 secular priests; 369 religious men in 27 convents, and 698 religious women in 97 (99) convents.
