Pseudepigraphy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
For instance, several Hebrew scholars would not insist that the Song of Solomon was actually written by the king of Israel or ascribe the Book of Enoch to the prophet Enoch, and not all Christian scholars would insist today that the Second Epistle of Peter was written by Saint Peter.
Nevertheless, in some cases, especially for books belonging to a religious canon, the question of whether a text is considered pseudepigraphical can become a matter of heavy dispute.
The collection known as the "Homeric hymns" is pseudepigraphical.

 Epistle of James
Many modern, critical scholars consider the epistle to be pseudepigraphical[?] and so the author could have been anyone, but they generally agree that "James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ" was intended to refer to James the Just.
If written by James the Just, the place and time of the writing of the epistle would be Jerusalem, where James was residing, before his martyrdom in 64.
If pseudepigraphical, then any time from 50 to 200, since it was first definitely quoted by Origen, and possibly a bit earlier by Clement of Alexandria in a lost work if Eusebius is to be believed.

Pseudepigraphal writings play a vital role in Greek lexigraphical and linguistic study, as they provide additional material written in Hellenistic Greek.
It also appears in the pseudepigraphal Testament of Judah: "Observe, therefore, my children, the (right) limit in wine; for there are in it four evil spirits—of lust, of hot desire, of profligacy, of filthy lucre." The words "filthy lucre" here are a translation of the same word αἰσχροκερδής.
Other pseudepigraphical works do the same (e.g., Joseph and Aseneth), even elevating Joseph to the level of “the son of God” and “the chosen one of God” (Joseph and Aseneth 6:2, 6; 13:10).

 pseudepigraphical
The document presents itself as written by James: "I, James, wrote this history in Jerusalem." Thus the purported author is James the Just, which the text claims to be a son of Joseph from a prior marriage, and thus a step-brother of Jesus.
Scholars have established that, based on the style of the language and the theological concerns, and the fact that the author is apparently not aware of contemporary Jewish customs, the work is pseudepigraphical (written by someone other than the person it claims to be written by).
Ron Cameron and others conclude that the author may have written independently of the synoptic Gospels and may have directly or indirectly used the Q Gospel, a hypothetical source also employed by the authors of Luke and Matthew, but applying to his borrowings a theology (including docetism) that was unacceptable to the dev...

 Pseudepigraphical Survivals
It is however not necessary to postulate the persistent survival of the ''Sadducee'' sect in order to explain the eruption and spread of Karaism, nor is it required to explain the continued survival of Second Temple pseudepigraphical literature among later scribal circles, both Jewish and Gentile.
Oftentimes recensions of pseudepigraphic works survive in several versions and linguistic traditions, attesting a lively scribal interest in the transmission and even embellishment of received wisdom.
Syriac literature is especially rich in Jewish pseudepigraphical ''survivals'' (for a convenient listing, see Bundy's 1991 SBLSP essay), a circumstance due in no small part to the sustained presence of substantial Jewish communities in Syria and Mesopotamia throughout the late antique and Islamicate periods.

"Pseudepigraphical Images in Early Art" is part of the Dead Sea Scrolls & Christian Origins Library, and informs us about how early Christian and Jewish artists embellished biblical stories.
However, the thesis of "Pseudepigraphical Images in Early Art" is that another strong source of such inspiration were the embellishments upon the Bible that early Christian artists illustrated from the sixth to fifteenth centuries.

The unknown Jewish and early Christian authors of pseudepigraphical works felt that, while they themselves had something important to say, their material might not be taken seriously unless it seemed to come from the pen of a famous person such as a disciple or a prophet.
All four of the gospels are pseudepigraphical works and today we use the names "Matthew" or "John" merely as convenient labels for the work.
A work cannot be anonymous (as the earliest manuscripts of the gospels are in the textual record) and at the same time be pseudepigraphical (i.e., having a fictional author named in the document).

Finding God in the Human Side of Scripture--By Dennis Berlin
The disturbing fact was the apparent use of Pseudepigraphical sources in such a way as to intimate that these stories were actually believed by Jude to be fact.
Pseudepigraphical books are any number of books from around the time of Christ bearing the name of some great person but which was not actually written by that person.
The tradition of the resurrection of Moses, however, was a prevailing tradition in Judaism and does fit--not necessarily the pseudepigraphical version--with the fact that Jesus on the mount of transfiguration saw Moses and Elijah both.

 Conflict
The plethora of Pseudepigraphical Documents which soon appeared in their names or based upon their persons indicates that some connection with Peter or Paul was a major criterion in filling the leadership vacuum created by their absence.
Fifty years after Paul's death, pseudepigraphical letters were fabricated in Paul's name, witnessing to a completely different church power structure than that which Paul knew.
The pseudepigraphical epistle to Titus seems to confuse the offices of Presbyter (elder, priest) and Bishop.

 COURSE SYLLABUS
Course description: This course provides an overview of the non-canonical, largely pseudepigraphical literature produced by Jewish authors (and in some cases adapted by non-Jewish editors) during the Second Temple, Roman, and Late Antique eras of Levantine Jewish history.
The student will introduce the class to the general issues involved in the study of the chosen work, respond to questions generated by the audience, and present a close exposition of one episode or chapter drawn from that same work.
These may be used as research resources for your class presentations, secondary readings papers, and research projects, or simply for general orientation in the discipline of Jewish apocryphal and pseudepigraphical literature.

J.P. Holding's view of the authorship/dates of the Gospels. - TheologyWeb Campus
And yet, now, it is rejected by conservatives and critical scholars alike as pseudepigraphical, because it did not make the cut at later church councils.
Now, if it is not pseudepigraphical, it is apostolic, and there should be no reason to not include it in the canon.
Can we infer that because church councils, on the basis of their criteria, eventually accepted the canon as we have it today and rejected some candidates as pseudepigraphical, that it is possible to understand how this lends creedence to the position of 'non-anonymity' (in conjunction with the external evidence).

The Pseudepigraphical Book of Enoch 1
There is ample reason for believing that the biblical and pseudepigraphic Enoch is a reflection of Mesopotamian traditions about the seventh antediluvian king Enmeduranki of Sippar, a king who was associated with the sun god and with divination.
For that matter, the fascination with seeking dreams and visions includes the recording of those dreams, as the inscriptions from the temples of Asclepius show, so we have some kind of contact between dreaming (or visions) and written documents.
The problem in knowning what to make of the apocalypses is that they are pseudepigraphical, but they are at least depicting their pseudepigraphical characters engaging in rituals that were thought by the ancients to stimulate oracular dreams.

Many modern commentaries either imply or state outright that Jude depended upon the pseudepigraphical Book of Enoch and the Assumption of Moses in his references to sinning angels and Satan's dispute with Michael over the body of Moses.
Similarly, the apostle Paul quoted pagan poets, but we are not to assume that Paul's use of pagan sources (Acts 17:28) lends support to the idea that the poets he quoted had written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
It should be understood that the legends found in the apocryphal and pseudepigraphical works are often founded upon older traditions, some of which contain elements of truth.

Introduction, Argument, and Outline
There is a growing number today, however, who regard it as pseudepigraphical (including Barnett, Reicke, Kelly), principally because there are internal features which suggest a date after the death of Jude.
Consequently, a pseudepigraphical piece is almost ruled out “since in such writings one of the major factors was attribution to an already well-known name.”
The primary reason scholars hold the priority of Jude, it seems, is that they view 2 Peter as pseudepigraphical.

The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament, Volume Two: Pseudepigrapha
This is a well known standard reference work and is frequently cited for discussions of noncanonical Old Testament biblical literature.
Because it was compiled before many important twentieth century discoveries of sources and versions (these are easily found and discussed in more recent sources) it is somewhat dated.
Some books are pseudepigraphical, but others are actually apocryphocal, and some are regarded as Patristic.

I don’t really see that this can be used as an argument, since arguing for the authenticity of Daniel based on it’s canonicity is violating the implied agreement to remain objective and refrain from using arguments based on one’s personal worldview.
As far as I know, later pseudepigraphical writings are usually in Greek.
This argument however, is not really that strong because as with the case of 4 Ezra, it is likely that many non-canonical books were originally written in Hebrew or Aramaic.

Scholars have long debated whether these letters were written by the apostle Paul himself, or by a loyal disciple who who sought to provide Pauline answers for new times and places.
While most scholars today regard them as pseudepigraphical (that is, ascribed to the authority of a major figure, but not actually written by him, a custom well attested both in ancient Jewish literature and in Greco-Roman philosophical and other texts), there is not complete unanimity on the question.
The conclusion that these three epistles were not written by Paul is based upon literary, historical, and theological criteria.

Holding is not that impressed with the differences between apocalyptic and earlier prophetic literature, but I think that even he would admit that ideas in Daniel are much closer to 4 Ezra or Enoch than they are to say, Isaiah or Ezekiel.
We should, in fact, take it as a starting point that Daniel is dated to the 2nd century, due to Daniel’s blatant similarity to 2nd century literature.
Because of the blatant similarity between Daniel and later pseudepigraphical literature, and because of the pseudonymous nature of pseudepigraphical literature, common sense would dictate that we date Daniel to the 2nd century B.C. as a starting point.
