Pseudoalteromonas is used in skin care products.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Pseudoalteromonas Antarctica NF is used in the manufacture of superior quality skin care and cosmetic products, and underneath please find a brief overview of this new cosmetic ingredient Antarcticine, and why it is used.
This new strain, called Pseudoalteromonas Antarctica NF was capable of interacting with gelatin, and during cell growth produced, by fermentation, an exopolymer of glycoprotein - composed of 76% protein and 14% sugars.
This is the active ingredient - Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract - patented under the name Antarcticine by the Spanish biotech firm Lipotec, for its remarkable properties in skin care.

 JGI Pseudoalteromonas atlantica T6c Home
Rationale for sequencing the genome of Pseudoalteromonas atlantica T6c:
Pseudoalteromonas atlantica is a motile, biofilm-forming, Gram-negative chemoorganotroph that is found in oceans worldwide.
These compounds often influence succession in marine communities; for example, several Pseudoalteromonas species produce antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and/or algicidal molecules while others produce compounds, such as extracellular polysaccharide, that facilitate settlement of tunicate and oyster larvae (Holmstrom and Kjelleberg 1999).

 Antarcticine.
Pseudoalteromonas ferment extract is an extract of the fermentation product of Pseudoalteromonas and is classed as a biological product which is used as a humectant as well as a humectant skin-conditioning agent.
It is obtained as an exopolymer, which is formed during cell growth on a gelatin base, of the Pseudoalteromonas Antarctica NF3 bacteria.
Although Antarcticine is not a bacteria, it is derived from a new type of bacteria found at the bottom of a glazier at Inset Admiralty bay (King George island, South Shetland Island, Antarctica) which was patented by the Spanish biotech firm Lipotec.

In contrast, the comparison of band patterns of endocytic bacteria and free-living marine bacteria were different, indicating the development of a specific bacterial population within N.
The DGGE bands identified by DNA sequencing were assigned to the species Marinobacter PCOB-2, to the Pseudoalteromonas group, and the Vibrio group, all members of the γ subdivisions of Proteobacteria.
Most of the isolates (14 strains) belong to several groups of the γ subdivision of Proteobacteria; 2 isolates are related to the Vibrio group and 1 isolate to Moraxella.

We report that Strain A3, a species of Pseudoalteromonas isolated from the CCA Hydrolithon onkodes (Heydrich), was able to induce significant levels (up to 51.5% ± 5.8 SE) of metamorphosis of Acropora willisae, Veron & Wallace 1984 and A.
Approximately the same number of larvae underwent partial metamorphosis, forming flattened discs that were not attached to the substrata.
Larvae underwent full settlement, attachment and metamorphosis only in the presence of Pseudoalteromonas A3 plus inert chips of the coral skeleton Porites sp., indicating that the calcareous matrix may play a role in the synthesis of inducers from Pseudoalteromonas Strain A3.

MooV, a DNA transposase, catalyzes reversible excision of the transposable element IS492, which regulates extracellular polysaccharide expression in the marine biofilm-forming bacterium, Pseudoalteromonas atlantica.
Definition of the molecular mechanisms for DNA recombination mediated by the recombinases of the Piv/MooV family will significantly contribute to understanding the numerous uncharacterized DNA rearrangements that are involved in medically important processes, ranging from microbial pathogenesis to oncogenesis, and may provide new targets for development of therapeutics.
Conserved amino acid motifs from the novel Piv/MooV family of transposases and site-specific recombinases are required for catalysis of DNA inversion by Piv.

These strains have DNA G+C contents similar to some non-pigmented Alteromonas species, actually Pseudoalteromonas, but exhibited a different protein profile.
These species can also be differentiated from the Pseudoalteromonas genus by some phenotypic characteristics as Na requirement acid production in the oxidation-fermentation test.
The levels of DNA relatedness between reference strains of Shewanella species and Pseudoalteromonas were less than 16%, thus indicate that our isolates are different species from S. putrefaciens, S. hanedai and P. haloplanktis.

The aggregation state of the microfilm produced by the glycoprotein (GP) excreted by a new Gram-negative species, Pseudoalteromonas antarctica NF, on a support of phosphatidylcholine (PC) liposomes was examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
Image analysis profiles of digitized freeze-fracture TEM micrographs show that the outer covering film (PC:GP weight ratio 8:2) consisted in a multilayer structure formed by 9-10 layers.
Image analysis of freeze-fracture TEM showed that the coatings present in these two types of liposomes had the same structure despite that the number of external layers in the first case was almost the half than that in the second.
