Topic: Pseudomorph

  pseudomorphs
In the case of pseudomorphs, the shape of a reacted mineral is retained by the mineral(s) that replaced it.
Metamorphic pseudomorphs are of great interest because they contain a lot of information for reconstructing the reaction and pressure-temperature history of a rock.
In the garnet on the left in this image, the high relief minerals in the pseudomorph may preserve an inclusion trail that was present in the garnet.

Pseudomorphs after chloritoid and cordierite conserve volume but not Al or other species of low mobility, suggesting a breakdown mechanism controlled by an interface process such as the slow dissolution of the refractory porphyroblast phase, rather than by a transport step.
The quartz-rich pseudomorphs indent only the outermost zones of andalusite and staurolite porphyroblasts, whereas the lath-shaped domains are abundant in their interiors.

By assuming that the specimens are combinations of calcite and aragonite, we find that the measurements are consistent with pseudomorphs that are 80 percent calcite and 20 percent aragonite by volume.
Fahey concluded that the pseudomorphs were derived when rainwater penetrating the near-surface layers leached out the sodium carbonate from the original shortite, leaving behind calcium carbonate.

Pseudomorphs are very interesting specimens, each by itself telling an interesting story with one mineral appearing in the habit of another.
Bismutite pseudomorph after Bismuthinite is a bismuth oxy-carbonate after a bismuth sulfide, the bismuth stays and the Bismutite forms by oxidation of the Bismuthinite - that is not conceptually too difficult.

 Pseudomorphs: The False Form Minerals
Pseudomorphs are minerals that have been chemically altered in some way and are new minerals which can have a new crystalline structure, but they still retain the shape of the original mineral.
When aragonite pseudomorphs into calcite it is similar to the beta-quartz and alpha-quartz in that the chemical composition is the same, but the internal crystalline structure is different.
The striations seen in the pyrite picture to the left would be visible on a pseudomorphic goethite due to the fact that pseudomorphs keep the same outward appearance as the initial mineral.
