Topic: Pseudoskeptics

Wholeness and the Implicate Order   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Pseudoskeptics who dismiss the evidence for paranormal phenomena a priori are committing a heinous crime against the scientific method.
The truth is there are loads of evidence for certain paranormal phenomena and the pseudoskeptics simply ignore it or misinterpret it; they are willing to sacrifice part or all of the scientific method just to protect their own beliefs.
No pseudoskeptic, materialist, or debunker has refuted the evidence (though they may have refuted misinterpretations of the evidence), and furthermore, none has ever given even one single datum for the validity of philosophical materialism.

Objectivity of Science - Bogus Skepticism
Pseudoskeptics complain that effect sizes are not bigger; but at the same time, they scream bloody murder if any grant-making agency even so much considers doing something about it.
Pseudoskeptics like Robert L. Park are not content just dismissing things like cold fusion; they put massive pressure on policy makers and government to obstruct efforts to prove them wrong.
This is the sole basis for the pseudoskeptical claim that, for example, a perpetuum mobile of the second kind is impossible.

Debunker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many debunkers are rather controversial because they have strong opinions and can be vocal about things which may offend people, such as religion and what they label pseudosciences.
In contrast, pseudoskeptics are simply deniers with an agenda and often use unscientific arguments to debunk what they oppose.
Truzzi argued that many things that pseudoskeptics label pseudoscience, could be more aptly be described as "protosciences" still struggling to establish mainstream acceptance.

 Some notes on Skepticism
Pseudoskeptics continue their ridicule of Cold Fusion as a mistake, even use "cold fusion" as a metaphor to refer to what they deem pathological science in general, ignoring a full decade of successful replication of the effect.
Pseudoskeptics, on the other hand, making the claim that the extraordinary phenomenon only appears to be extraordinary, and has a conventional explanation, have to bear a burden of proof of their own.
Pseudoskeptics try to invalidate unconventional claims by pointing out that the claimants derive financial support from their research (through books, newsletters or speaking engagements), blithely ignoring that conventional scientists derive their livelihood from their work as well.

bc skeptics | skeptopaedia | resources: skeptopaedia
Pseudoskeptics are people who appeal to skeptical terminology, but do not practice it.
One of the challenges of organized skepticism is that the term is often confused with iconoclasm or cynicism.
Common pseudoskeptics are: holocaust deniers, antisemites, conspiracy theorists, knee-jerk debunkers, aggressive atheists.

Skepticism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Debunkers frequently reply that it is the claimant, whom they many times accuse of exploiting public gullibility, who is guilty of abuse.
Habitual debunkers are sometimes called pseudoskeptics or pathological skeptics and accused of intentionally relying on pseudoscience masquerading as empirical skepticism.
Religious skeptics may focus on the core tenets of religions, such as the existence of divine beings, or reports of earthly miracles.

They can nevertheless be deeply damaging to the careers of dedicated scientists, as several of this book's targets discovered to their cost.
Finally, they neglect to mention that pseudoskeptics like themselves are often instrumental in ending the research -- not some natural loss of interest.
Gratzer acknowledges in passing that scientists who pursue research that is considered unsound by their conservative colleagues are unlikely to get published and unlikely to receive funding grants.

The pseudoskeptics, on the other hand, are mere dogmatists who engage in verbal sleight of hand to win arguments and reinforce their pre-existing, unshakable assumptions.

Someone who pontificates on "tinfoil hat" subjects as much as you do ought to be familiar with the term "pseudoskeptic." It was not invented by me. It was first used by Marcello Truzzi, a co-founder of CSICOP, probably the biggest and most influential "skeptic" organization in the world.
And I think everyone on SDC knows what a pseudoskeptic is. You are to thank for that since it is your only defense when challenged.
Put the word "pseudoskeptic" in the title of a thread, and they all flock to it in droves.
