  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Psilophyta
Psilophyta is a division of the Kingdom Plantae.
Today, there are four main groupings of seedless vascular plants: Psilophyta, which represent the earliest version of the plant; Lycophyta, more commonly known as club mosses; Sphenophyta, more commonly known as horsetails; and Pterophyta, the division everyone is familiar with, more commonly known as ferns.
Psilophyta are considered tropical plants, and Psilotum, for example, grows wild in Florida woodlands.

The Land Plants - An Evolutionary Overview
nce regarded as the most primitive extant vascular plants, the two remaining genera of Psilophyta are now thought to represent a highly reduced lineage of ferns.
Nevertheless, many of the characteristics of Psilophyta resemble those of the earliest vascular plants, as seen in the fossil record.
he two genera of Psilophyta, Psilotum and Tmesipteris, are mainly tropical epiphytes, but the range of Psilotum extends as far north as southern Florida.

 THE VASCULAR CRYPTOGAMS
It is a collective term for plants that have vascular tissue (this excludes the bryophytes) and which do not have large reproductive units such as the seed.
There are only two extant genera in the Psilophyta, Psilotum of Indonesia and Tmesipteris from New Zealand.
Psilotum is the common General Botany representative because it is easy to keep and has the most primitive appearance.

Lower vascular plants are represented by 4 divisions: Psilophyta (whisk ferns), Lycophyta (Club mosses), Sphenophyta (scouring rushes), and the Pterophya (ferns)
Division Psilophyta (whisk ferns) are the most primitive vascular plants
Division Psilophyta has only a single family (Psilotaceae) and 2 genera (Psilotum and Tmesipteris).

The divisions that make up the bryophytes (Hepatophyta, Anthocerophyta, and Bryophyta) and the seedless vascular plants (including Psilophyta, Lycophyta, Sphenophyta, and Pterophyta) represent the earliest colonists of the terrestrial habitats and the first plants to explore the advantages of being large.
They appear in the fossil record as early as 430 million years ago and were associated with endomycorrhizae at that time.

Seedless Vascular Plants | Macmillan Plant Sciences
The Lycophyta, Equisetophyta, and Psilophyta are collectively referred to as the fern allies because, like the ferns (Pterophyta), they reproduce by single-celled spores released from sporangia (spore sacs).
The Psilophyta have long been thought to be among the most primitive of all living vascular plants because of their similarity in form to some of the oldest land plant fossils.
Recent studies, however, indicate that they may be more closely related to the ferns than to the fern allies.

Seedless Vascular Plants   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Actually, seedless vascular plants are not only Pterophyta (ferns for those nature types) but also encompass Psilophyta, Lycophyta, and Sphenophyta.
This plant has no leaves and no roots because the vascular systems that can distribute water, resulting in larger leaves, have yet to develop.
The Lycopodium and Selaginella species are examples of Lycophyta and can be found in various places throughout the Earth.

The earliest true fossil plants belong to the Division Psilophyta.
The Psilophyta, Anthrophyta and Pterophyta similarly produce homospores.
In the more advanced plants such as the Lycopodophyta some primitive forms only produce homospores but in general two kinds of spores are produced: microspores and megaspores.

Seedless plants, sometimes referred to as primitive or lower plants, include groups such as bryophytes (mosses, hornworts, liverworts), Pteridophytes (ferns), Lycophyta (Lycopodium, Selaginella) Psilophyta (whisk "fern"), and Sphenophyta (horsetails).
What differentiates them from seed plants is the fact that they do not produce seeds.
