Psilotophyta (the "whisk ferns"; also sometimes as Psilophyta) is a ((botany) taxonomic unit of plants corresponding to a phylum) division (i.e., phylum) of the (One of seven biological categories: Monera or Protoctista or Plantae or Fungi or Animalia) Kingdom (The taxonomic kingdom comprising all living or extinct plants) Plantae.
There has long been controversy about the relationships of the Psilotophyta, with some claiming that they are (Any of numerous flowerless and seedless vascular plants having true roots from a rhizome and fronds that uncurl upward; reproduce by spores) ferns (Pteridophyta), and others maintaining that they are descendants of the first vascular plants.
Psilotophyta also do not have true ((botany) the usually underground organ that lacks buds or leaves or nodes; absorbs water and mineral salts; usually it anchors the plant to the ground) roots.

Psilotophyta (the "whisk ferns"; also sometimes as Psilophyta) is a division (i.e., phylum) of the Kingdom Plantae.
There has long been controversy about the relationships of the Psilotophyta, with some claiming that they are ferns (Pteridophyta), and others maintaining that they are descendants of the first vascular plants.
Recent evidence from DNA suggests a closer affinity to the ferns.

Critical appraisal (from Psilotophyta) --  Encyclopædia Britannica   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
For many years this group was thought to be primitive in its simplicity and related to simple plants of Silurian and Devonian times (438 to 360 million years ago).
However, the lack of an intervening fossil record and differences in morphology have led botanists to conclude that the Psilotophyta are unrelated to those early vascular plants.

As with angiosperms, plants of the Psilotophyta have vascular tissue (xylem and phloem), however, they are characterised by the lack of roots, and sometimes the lack of leaves.
The plants consist of a small, underground, gametophyte, which lacks chlorophyll and has associations with mycorrhizal fungi.

Psilotophyta (whisk ferns) is a division represented by two living genera (Psilotum and Tmesipteris) and several species that are restricted to the subtropics.
This unusual group of small herbaceous plants is characterized by a leafless and rootless body possessing a stem that exhibits a primitive dichotomous type of branching: it forks into equal halves.

This page treats the three lower vascular plant divisions; the Psilotophyta, Lycopodiopsida, and Equisetopyhta.
The subphylum Psilotophyta (Psilophyta or Psilopsida) represents the most primitive vascular plants.
These plants arose in the Silurian and Devonian and are characterized by the presence of tracheids, but they lack true roots or leaves.
