Psion 5 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Psion 5 is a PDA from Psion.
Psion's experience designing for this form factor and attention to detail has made these machines a favourite with power users, many of whom have stuck with them, despite their age and the appearance of Symbian OS-powered mobile phones and other PDAs with more impressive-sounding specifications.
There have been intermittent rumours of Psion's return to the consumer market, but the Series 5mx would seem to be their swansong.

 Convergence: Psion Series 5
Psion's good design is evident again in the case, the keyboard slides forward as the Series 5 is opened to allow room for laptop style keys.
The Series 5 is also expandable, it includes a standard CompactFlash slot for the addition of extra storage space, currently 10MB disks are the largest available, but 100MB disks are expected by the end of the decade and the Series 5 is ready for them.
The Series 5 allows e-mail to be sent and received, web browsing, and access to other standard Internet services, as well as being able to send and received faxes (a screenshot of the Internet software in use is available).

The fundamental difference between the MessagePad and the Series 5 is that the Newton device is designed to be used primarily via handwriting recognition while the Series 5 is a keyboard-focused device.
The Psion, by contrast, is an intricate little gadget with numerous little doors and compartments and the famous hinged lid with slide-out keyboard.
Psion sells an adaptor for a PC Card modem, but the thought of carrying the adaptor and its extra cables and batteries turns me off.

Psion Organiser - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Psion Organiser II The Psion Organiser was the brand name of a range of personal digital assistants developed by the British company Psion from 1984.
Early Psion Organisers, the first version and the Organiser II, had a characteristic hard plastic sliding cover protecting a 6x6 keyboard with letters arranged alphabetically.
Later organisers, such as the Series 3 and Psion 5 were of a clamshell design with a QWERTY keyboard, and featured applications with Microsoft Excel and MS-Word compatibility.

When the Psion is totally opened, the keyboard is at a very slightly elevated angle and the screen is at a comfortable viewing angle.

Closed, the Psion Series 5 measures 3.5" wide by 6.7" long by 1" thick and weighs 12.5 ounces (including the two AA batteries and watch-style back-up battery).
The Series 5 also has a "pen" (just over 5.5" long) which fits nicely in the hand and is used to select objects on the screen.
And while the Series 5 user community is nowhere near as large or rabid as the Palm/Pilot's, it is growing (the Series 5 is very popular in Europe) and there are already some cool add-ons available on the 'Net.

Psion enabled the 5mx to run Standard Java (version 1.1.4; future versions will be supported as well) with a bunch of extensions.
One of the downsides of Psion's Series 5 models is that you actually can't hold them in your hand and use the keyboard to its full extent (i.e., you can't touch-type on the keyboard unless you've got the unit on a flat surface so that you don't have to hold it).
The Psion user community is steadily expanding in the US, and the developers writing software and making accessories are proliferating at an amazing rate (and will continue to do so now that the 5mx is faster, has more memory, and runs Java).

Psion actually has an alliance (Symbian) with all the major cellphone companies, with the intent of creating smartphones based on EPOC, the operating system developed and used by Psion.
A more immediate implication of this alliance is that Psion is actually quite cash-rich at the moment, meaning that the company won't go belly-up tomorrow and leave you stranded.
