Psittaciformes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some authorities regard the lorikeets as a third family rather than part of the Psittacidae, or lump the cockatoos into one giant family.
The majority view, however, is that the Cacatuidae are quite distinct, having a movable headcrest, different arrangement of the carotid arteries, a gall bladder, different skull bones, and not having the Dyck texture feather composition which, in the Psittacidae, scatters light in such a way as to produce the vibrant colours of so many parrots.
Birds of the parrot families can be found in most of the warmer parts of the world, including India, South East Asia and West Africa, with one species, now extinct, in the United States (the Carolina Parakeet).

The Psittacidae is Edward Lear’s most remarkable achievement: he conveyed with telling sympathy the carriage of a bird, the grasp of the claws, the tilt of the head, its grave, curious, or quizzical expression.
The book, first issued in parts, was drawn, lithographed, and published on a shoestring by Lear himself in a tiny edition.

 Literary Encyclopedia: Lear, Edward
He applied to the brand-new Gardens of the Zoological Society of London for permission to make drawings of their parrots.
Lear’s illustrations were reproduced lithographically and published in folio format for subscribers between 1830 and 32 as Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots.
It was immediately compared to the work of John Audubon, and the twenty-year old Lear was briefly fêted and made an Associate of the Linnean Society (two parrots now bear Lear’s name: Lapochroa leari, Lear’s cockatoo, and Anodorhynchus leari, Lear’s macaw).
