Leave it to Psmith is a comedy adventure involving crime and gunplay, all set into motion by an umbrella in the Drones Club and Mulliner Nights is a series of stories about the inimitable Mr.
Psmith was his greatest creation, and if you've read the other three Psmith books first (and you should), it's very touching and funny to see him fall in love and make the ultimate sacrifice: masquerading as a sensitive poet and a jewel thief all at once.
Psmith is deucedly witty, charming, unaffected, steady and optimistic.

Psmith - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rupert Psmith (or Ronald Eustace Psmith, as he is called in the last of the four books in which he appears) is a fictional character in several comic novels by P.
Wodehouse based Psmith on Rupert D'Oyly Carte (1876–1948), the son of the Gilbert and Sullivan impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte, as he put it "the only thing in my literary career which was handed to me on a silver plate with watercress around it".
In a typical example from Leave it to Psmith, he perceives Eve, trapped by the rain under an awning, and decides, chivalrous gentleman that he is, to get her an umbrella.

Psmith is my favourite Wodehouse character, and this is his most exciting adventure.
With the Psmith stories, PG Wodehouse signalled the end of his school stories, and the beginning of his marvellous career as the finest English comic authour of the century, combining plot character, and language, so brilliantly.

When Leave it to Psmith was published in 1923, after being serialized in the Saturday Evening Post, it was viewed as an Edwardian fairyland world, the reality of which had perished on the battlefields of France.
Ironically, it was not Psmith's first appearance, but his last - considering his popularity, and the Master's eye for a ready buck, a cause for puzzlement.
Psmith ("an old Etonian") first appeared as a rich, sophisticated classmate of the hero, Mike Jackson, in The Lost Lambs of 1908.

Psmith is elevated to the principle character quite clearly - a trend which continues in "Psmith, journalist", and of course is entirely dominant in the concluding "Leave it to Psmith", where Mike is relegated to the background.
Psmith's unique character traits are generally revealed in his conversation, and Wodehouse makes the most of this - certainly more than he was able to in the earlier school settings for Mike and Psmith.
The dialogue does not, perhaps, soar to the heights it achieves in "Leave it to Psmith", but this is a distinctly earlier piece of writing.

Where Psmith stood like some dignified piece of sculpture, musing on deep questions with a glassy eye, his father would be trying to be in four places at once.
When Psmith presented Mike to him, he shook hands warmly with him and started a sentence, but broke off in the middle of both performances to dash wildly in the direction of the pavilion in an endeavour to catch an impossible catch some thirty yards away.
