Topic: Psophometer

Definition: psophometer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
psophometer: An instrument that provides a visual indication of the audible effects of disturbing voltages of various frequencies.
Note: A psophometer usually incorporates a weighting network.
The characteristics of the weighting network depend on the type of circuit under investigation, such as whether the circuit is used for high-fidelity music or for normal speech.

(Technically termed psophometric (pronounced "so-fo-metric") filters, after the psophometer, a device used to measure noise in telephone circuits, broadcast, and other audio communication equipment.
A psophometer was a voltmeter with a set of weighting filters.) Weighting filters are a special type of band-limiting filters designed to correspond to the way we hear or some other specific criteria.

A psophometer was a voltmeter with a set of weighting filters.] Weighting filters are a special type of band-limiting filters designed to compliment the way we hear.
Since the ear's loudness vs. frequency response is not flat, it is argued, we should not try to correlate flat frequency vs. loudness measurements with what we hear.

Definition: psophometric weighting   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
psophometric weighting: A noise weighting established by the International Consultative Committee for Telephony (CCIF, which became CCITT and, more recently, ITU-T), designated as CCIF-1951 weighting, for use in a noise measuring set or psophometer.
Note: The shape of this characteristic is virtually identical to that of F1A weighting.
The psophometer is, however, calibrated with a tone of 800 Hz, 0 dBm, so that the corresponding voltage across 600 ohms produces a reading of 0.775 V. This introduces a 1-dBm adjustment in the formulas for conversion with dBa.

.RT.sp 2P.LP \fB2\fR \fBGeneral\fR.sp 1P.RT.PP To accomplish the measurements as stated above, a psophometer should have the following significant characteristics:.RT.LP a) The relative sensitivity of the instrument, at various frequencies, should be as specified by the psophometric weighting characteristics.
When the level is decreased over a range of 10\ dB the psophometer reading shall be proportional to the applied level decrease with a tolerance of \(+-
As a consequence, the relationship between measurements made with the North American noise meter and the CCITT psophometer is dependent on the frequency spectrum of the noise being measured.

First we need to agree on a definition of 100% modulation, then on a way to measure the “improvement” that results in the audio.
To start the discussion I would suggest a program psophometer (ITU-R 468-4) to measure the program level.
It is a very fully characterized standard that you can obtain automated instruments to measure, and takes psychoacoustics a lot more into account than a simple flat, band limited VU or PPM type instrument.
