Pspell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The purpose of Pspell (Portable Spell Checker Interface Library) was to provide a generic interface to the system spelling checking libraries.
Pspell has not been updated since 2001, but is still available on SourceForge at its project page.
For example, the PHP extensions for using Pspell should no longer be used; instead a recent version of GNU Aspell with a recent version of PHP should be used.

Beware that this feature can use a lot of memory especially with aspell dictionaries, but then you can switch quickly from one dictionary to another, which is handy if you write bilangual messages.
Pspell work with dynamic linking of libraries and thus uses the libltdl library of libtool.
If you have weird problems when configuring showing 'libtool', chances are the libtool used when compiling the pspell package is not compatible with what you have on your system.

 PHP: Pspell - Manual
Running PHP.exe from command line causes pspell to claim that there is a corrupt file.
It is not necessary to download and install the Pspell package, only Aspell 0.50 (or better) is required.
Even though Aspell now provided a new "Aspell" interface this, the PHP Pspell interface is the one you want to use.

I personally prefer the old way (pspell) of doing things, although it will become a dead end at some time, and would keep it until the affix compresion support is merged into aspell, but that is only my point of view.
Since pspell is deprecated, upstreams should be moving away from it.
Pspell is already considered a dead end, by the author anyway.

MySpell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MySpell was started by Kevin Hendricks to integrate various open source spelling checkers into the OpenOffice.org build.
With a little prodding from Kevin Atkinson, the author of Pspell and Aspell, a new spelling checker (MySpell) was written in C++ that supported affix compression, based on Ispell.
This code has been given to Pspell and will eventually make it into a future Pspell release after it has been integrated.

Once the pspell feature is added, we will have to update in the Policy document and to rebuild of all the dictionay packages in the staging area.
With respect to us, pspell can put a Debian specific file with entries for all ispell dicts known in Debian (they will surely work for aspell too), or we can handle that diverting that file, but it is simpler from the libpspell4 package.

It seems that the SMF forum requires that PHP is built with pspell support.
I realize "pspell for SMF" would probably not be welcomed either by my host provider ICDSoft.
My guess is they may have had problems in the past with extremely large forums or other applications using pspell.

Pspell Add-ons? And spell-check solution? - vBulletin Community Forum
It seems perfectly plausible to use pspell to suggest spellings for incorrectly spelled words.
I think pspell is the only "free" solution available for use with PHP.
Perhaps Jelsoft could setup a virtual host or server to handle requests from licensed owners of vBulletin by charging an extra fee and authorizing a URL (for instance, check to see if the last URL is from an allowed domain name) with an installation of pspell and a script designed to work with checking spelling.

 Re: [PHP] pspell problems
To the best of my knowledge, you don't have to complie/install pspell anymore to have the functions work with php...only need aspell (as both aspell and pspell are combined in the aspell release)
If Debian is like Red Hat, you will also need to install some type of development package for aspell (aspell-devel in Red Hat), or install from source so that the headers are present on your system.
I just removed pspell and reinstalled aspell instant:~/php-4.3.9# whereis aspell aspell: /usr/bin/aspell /usr/lib/aspell /usr/include/aspell.h /usr/share/aspell /usr/share/man/man1/aspell.1.gz I tried:./configure --with-pspell=/usr/bin/aspell./configure --with-pspell=/usr/lib/aspell./configure --with-pspell=/usr/share/aspell But it still comes up with: checking for PSPELL support...

Thirdly you gotta write some PHP to use the aspell/pspell stuff via the pspell PHP functions.
Get aspell/pspell (see related links) and configure/make/make install (all default, nothing special required.) Note- I had some issues with the RPMs on Redhat 7.x for aspell/pspell and the locations of libraries, I had to remove the RPMs and use the default compile-installs and then all worked fine.
After looking at the PHP docs I noticed that most of the aspell functions are deprecated and so decided that I would try with just pspell.

Hope this helps

 PHP: pspell version question
It just has the fact that I have enabled pspell.
Well, to tell the truth current implementation of pspell extension doesn't give opportunity to determine version of used library, but you can try to compile it with the library of your choice by specifying --with-pspell=[/path/to/yourlib]
If you don't specify this path, compiler will use pspell library from /usr and if there is no lib installed there it will try to find one from /usr/local
