"The Psychedelic Furs were at the forefront of defining a new genre of music, rebels against the aesthetic narrow-mindedness of punk.
While the band's rise paralleled the first wave of MTV, the Furs had little in common with the prepackaged, fashion-oriented acts who dominated the music video channel for much of the 1980s.
Too far ahead of their time to reach a modern-rock audience that didn't really exist yet, the Furs were progenitors of the guitar-based alternative rock that would, ironically, begin to find a mass audience at the same time that the band was winding down.

Mirror Moves brought the Furs to an unrepeatable zenith of commercial/creative achievement; the rest of their career was an anti-climax.
In the late '90s, the Furs — in the person of the Butler brothers, Ashton and a few hired hands — hit the concert trail, touring with the Go-Go's, Echo and the Bunnymen and others.

The Psychedelic Furs came together in North London in 1977, and were one of the early pioneers of "Post Punk", which was a sound that blended the gritty anger of The Sex Pistols with the experimental edge of David Bowie.
Raw and passionate, but never cheezy, "The Psychedelic Furs" introduces the world to Richard Butlers haunting "Bowie meets Rotten" vocals, the twin guitar attack of Richard Morris and John Ashton, and the sonic blast of drummer Vince Ely and bassist Tim Butler.

Just about everybody who was listening to top 40 radio in the '80s probably remembers the Psychedelic Furs, which is strange because they never really were a "top 40" band.
From the bands inception in 1978 in London, to their break in 1991, the Psychedelic Furs struggled to find a consistant audience for their '60s psychedelia-infused, punk-inspired rock.

The Furs has a special way to express themselves as a group, and I think that, that in the beginning of their carrier, and also now and then later on, created many of their difficulties, but every single member of the group is very competent at his work.

Folks who bought the Psychedelic Furs' debut album digested the word "stupid" a riveting 14 times.
Through the Furs' decade-plus career, styoooopid became a recurring buzz word, much the same way you couldn't gob on an old Springsteen album and not hit the words "night," "street" and "darkness." For a band obsessed with the "s" word, the Furs themselves did a surprisingly small amount of styoooopid things.
So it surprised no one to see the Furs repackage the hits on the summer concert circuit in 2001 (and adding a live album and one solitary new song to their discography).

I think the Furs were really better off in the studio than live, but radio performances are a reasonable compromise, and a couple of these, notably the surging guitars of "Soap Commercial" and Richard's voice cracking on "Susan's Strange", are eye-opening.

Even though they are not pushing a new album or material, the Psychedelic Furs have hit the road to remind everyone that songs such as "Love My Way" and "Heartbreak Beat" are just as timely now as they were when they were released.
