Psychoanalysis & The College of Psychoanalysts: Department of Health
I was glad to have the opportunity of listening to your presentation at the recent conference on the results of the mapping process, in connection with proposals for state-regulation of the professions of psychotherapy and counselling.
Psychoanalysts may be divided into two broad categories of practitioner: those who are affiliated to the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA) and those who are affiliated to other reputable and long-established world-wide bodies for psychoanalysis.
The College of Psychoanalysts was founded to address this problem and to promote psychoanalysis as a discipline which is not owned, as some would claim, by any single group.

French psychoanalysts mad over reform, French News, France, Expatica
France has around 6,000 psychoanalysts - divided into often competing intellectual camps - and betwen 20,000 and 30,000 psychotherapists, who conduct face-to-face sessions with clients as opposed to the couch therapy favoured by Freudians and Lacanians.
Critics say the absence of regulation and a growing demand for therapy of all kinds has led to a proliferation of astrologers, mystics and con-artists - and they are demanding that the public be protected by a system of recognised qualifications.
In a faction-ridden climate, many psychoanalysts also see the government's initiative as an attempt by their arch-enemies the psychiatrists - hospital-based doctors who prescribe drugs for treating mental illness - to marginalise their work.

FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH THE OUTCOME OF PSYCHOANALYSIS OF
Although contemporary psychoanalysts do not expect their homosexual patients to change to heterosexuality (Maclntosh, 1994), most believe a homosexual patient in analysis may be able to change to heterosexuality sometimes (62 percent) or frequently (four percent).
This is the case even though psychoanalysts as a group have had relatively modest experience working with homosexual patients in psychoanalysis.
Contemporary psychoanalysts appear to be analyzing patients longer than they have in the past, frequently leading to enhanced patient benefit (Abend, 1992).

Psychoanalysts line up for therapeutic row | Society | SocietyGuardian.co.uk
There are few people who could tell you the difference between a psychoanalyst and a psychotherapist, never mind describe the work of a psychoanalytic psychotherapist; few except the practitioners themselves, and to them there really is a difference - a difference so important that they have been squabbling over it for decades.
The crux of the BPAS argument is that a "true" psychoanalyst is someone who has undergone a rigorous training that includes intensive analysis of their own with a training analyst who is a member of the International Psychoanalytical Association, a society founded by Freud.
The founder of the College of Psychoanalysts, Jacques China, who has a clinical doctorate in psychology from University College London and is organiser for the MA in clinical psychoanalysis at the University of Hertfordshire, says it is a "pluralistic organisation that could encompass psychoanlaysts of all persuasions".

Thus, the goal of this research is to present the views of a group of trained psychoanalysts regarding changes in their work over the last five years.
Psychoanalysts in our sample also hold masters and doctorates in other fields such as sociology, philosophy, education, literature, nursing, communications, business, philosophy, religion, and the arts.
Nonetheless, there is a general trend toward greater feminization in psychoanalysis as in many other "helping professions." The implications of an increasing number of women psychoanalysts should be explored, since it is likely to bring about changes in the status of the profession and concerns about diversity(2).

 Who's afraid of the brain
Psychoanalysts, of course, are used to the idea that the self is vulnerable; so am I, for perhaps different reasons.
I can easily imagine that psychoanalysts, familiar with the complexities, potentialities, and vagaries of selves, might well be skeptical of the idea that they could be embodied in something as "simple" as brains.
I suspect some psychoanalysts (along with many others) have a secret (or not so secret) fear that an exploration of the brain might somehow lead to the disappearance of the very concept of "self", perhaps even of the thing itself.

Psychoanalysis & The College of Psychoanalysts: Professional Titles
Their website has, right up to the present time, been replete with their exposition of this position and it would not be unreasonable to hold them to this position in relation to the issue of the professional title which should be available to psychoanalytic practitioners for the purpose of state-registration.
However, if the title psychoanalyst does indeed become a registered professional title, The College will seek to be heard on the question of the criteria and competencies to be used in recognising those practitioners who are entitled to use that title.
As has been made clear before, The College of Psychoanalysts was founded to further the discipline of psychoanalysis in a pluralistic manner and to promote reconciliation and understanding among all schools and organisations from the entire spectrum of psychoanalysis.

 Psychoanalysts Live Longer
Psychoanalysis is based on the observation that individuals are often unaware of many of the factors that determine their emotions and behavior.
Therefore, psychoanalysts may be mentally healthier than the general public or even psychiatrists, Jeffery says.
His next step is to try and do a study comparing psychiatrists who undergo psychoanalysis to psychiatrists who have not and see how the two groups compare in terms of longevity.

Members of the public considering psychoanalysis may want to consult this list to make sure that a practitioner describing themselves as a psychoanalyst is in fact qualified genuinely to practise this intensive form of treatment.
If you have any doubts that a particular individual is qualified to represent themselves as a qualified psychoanalyst you may wish to consult the comprehensive listing of all qualified practising Institute trained psychoanalysts working currently in the UK.
The Institute lists exclude the names of those psychoanalysts trained by other organisations whose training and clinical experience is recognised formally by the IPA under their stringent equivalency procedures.

I know that many of you are even involved in training psychoanalysts in universities and that you probably owe a great deal to such institutions and are understandably grateful for the education that you obtained from that experience.
Psychoanalysts are human beings who help others come into their own by treating them as they would like to be treated themselves, with a modicum of respect, compassion, and honesty.
I believe there is, and I cannot think of a better example on which to base such a model than the free association method, adapted from a confidential treatment experience to a milieu environment in which candidates come together with a view to applying the instrument to which they have already been inured.

The students were provided with multi-media talking books which enabled them to follow the courses and interact with their teachers through assignments and quizzes on a computer at home and work units or a training centre for the handicapped in their communities.
