Psychrophilic bacteria are abundant in the near-freezing waters of the Arctic and the Antarctic.
Psychrophiles utilize a wide variety of metabolic pathways, including photosynthesis, chemoautotrophy (also sometimes known as lithotrophy), and heterotrophy, and form robust, diverse communities.
Obligate psychrophiles are those organisms having a growth temperature optimum of 15°C or lower and cannot grow in a climate beyond a maximum temperature of 20°C. They are largely found in icy places (such as in Antarctica) or at the freezing bottom of the ocean floor.

Psychrophilic species actually prefer the cold and grow best at temperatures between 0 and 20 degrees C. There are actually many habitats in Antarctica where things can live.
As you suggested, many of the organisms that live there are bacteria, but there are also single-celled protozoans, fungi such as yeasts, algae and simple plants such as lichens and mosses.
There are also several kinds of fish and insects that live happily at 1-5 degrees C. My current research is concerned with the psychrophilic Archaea, which are similar in some ways to bacteria, but form a different domain of life.
