Topic: Pteridaceae

A TAXONOMIC STUDY OF THE OKLAHOMA SPECIES OF THE FAMILY PTERIDACEAE
Pteridaceae, a family of true ferns, is comprised of 13 genera, 5 of which can be found in Oklahoma.
My study of Pteridaceae was an attempt to construct a classification scheme that would create an understanding of why several alterations have been undertaken in the placement of the 16 species within the 5 genera, and to show the relationship between the species.
Within Pteridaceae, the species that Waterfall recognizes as a member of Notholaena and that others recognized as Pellaea is now recognized as Argyrochosma dealbata by the Flora of North America.

Pteridaceae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pteridaceae is a large family of ferns in the order Pteridales.
Members of the family have creeping or erect rhizomes and are mostly terrestrial or epipetric (growing on rock).
The family includes four groups of genera that are sometimes recognized as separate families: the adiantoid, cheilanthoid, pteroid, and hemionitidoid ferns.

We use cladistic analysis of phylogenetically informative molecular data (mutations in chloroplast DNA restriction sites and in the nucleotide sequences of chloroplast and nuclear genes) to infer major evolutionary lineages that can be recognized as natural genera and infrageneric taxa within the cheilanthoid ferns.

In general, we identify fronds (the leaf), pinnae (leaflets of a frond), and sori (reproductive clusters found on the underside of the pinnae.)
Pteridaceae produce their shiny leaves in clusters, with petioles (leaf stems) brown to fl.
The leaves are at least bipinaately compound (symetrical around a major axis and sub-axis), and carry the sori (reproductive clusters) along the margins of the leaf or lobes.

In Denali the "lower plants" are represented by the following groups: true ferns (Blechnaceae, Dryopteridaceae, Pteridaceae, Thelypteridaceae, and Polypodiaceae) the horsetails (Equisetaceae), Club mosses, (Lycopodiaceae), Spike mosses (Selaginellaceae) and quillworts (Isoetaceae).
The most species-rich fern family in the Denali National Park flora is the Wood fern family (Dryopteridaceae; 13 species), followed by the Maidenhair fern family (Pteridaceae; 3 species).
There is one species each from the three other fern families that occur here: Chain fern family (Blechnaceae), Polypody family (Polypodiaceae), and Maiden fern family (Thelypteridaceae).
