Pharmaceutical composition for the treatment of genetically caused degenerative retina diseases and a process for the ...
Therefore, the present invention is based on the new recognition that in the case of retinopathia pigmentosa patients, the lack of pteridines, which appears to be of significance for the pathogenisis of this disease, can be compensated for by the administration of pteridines and/or by influencing the enzymes which destroy pteridines.
Therefore, the invention concerns the use of pteridines and/or biochemical precursors thereof or of an xanthinoxidase inhibitor for the treatment of genetically caused degnerative retina diseases.
Pteridines are found in nature and are isolated from the wings of butterflies and also from eyes of insects.

Pteridines are present in many invertebrates, in plants, and even in certain fishes and amphibians.
The pteridine patterns of flies with mutant eye colors are distinctly different from that of the wild type flies.
The possible pteridines that you might find are listed in the table below, along with their colors, in the order that they might be found on the chromatogram (the first is closest to the solvent front, the last is closest to the origin.) Indicate which pteridines are present in each of your samples.

Critical Care | Full text | Pteridines and cytokines induce apoptotic cell death in alveolar epithelial cells
The pteridines neopterin and 7.8-dihydroneopterin influence the cellular oxidant-antioxidant balance as well as the expression of the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) gene.
In contrast to these cytokines apoptotic cell death due to the pteridines is not mediated by nitric oxide.
The pronounced apoptosis by the pteridines may be of importance in inflammatory pulmonary diseases associated with an activation of the cellular immune system.

 DTPaseIdentification
The overall aims of this project were to identify a bacterial gene encoding the pteridine and folate biosynthesis enzyme dihydroneopterin triphosphate pyrophosphatase (DTPase) and to use this gene as a bridge to clone the corresponding enzyme from Arabidopsis (Klaus et al, 2005).
Pteridines have characteristic UV absorption spectra and their aromatic forms are strongly fluorescent; these features are useful in identification and measurement (Rembold and Gyure, 1972; Pfleiderer, 1984).
Pteridines are generally poorly water-soluble when uncharged and more soluble when ionized (Pfleiderer, 1984; Nixon, 1984); some (e.g., isoxanthopterin) are acid-insoluble (Rembold and Gyure, 1972).

[From butterflies to neurobiology and the diagnosis of AIDS. The 100th anniversary of the discovery of pteridines]
The first report on the isolation of pteridines from biological materials was published in 1889.
During the last 100 years a large number of pteridines have been isolated from many different organisms and have been shown to be involved in several biochemical processes.
Recently, it has been shown that pteridines also are involved in immunological responses, and neopterin has been suggested as a diagnostic marker for malignancies, virus infections and acute rejection episodes following allotransplantation.

Current Drug Metabolism, Volume 3, No. 2, 2002
Pteridine derivatives which have a widespread occurrence in nature have been investigated upon their interactions with free radicals and free radical mediated reactions utilizing a number of different experimental systems.
Searching for biological functions, which are still unknown for the majority of pteridine compounds, the effect of pteridines in systems like luminol-induced chemiluminescence, enzyme activity, DNA photodamage, EPR experiments or radical induced injury - just to name a few - have been investigated.
Meanwhile the data available provide a more complex view: pteridines of all oxidation states have been shown to act anti- or prooxidatively, depending on the special conditions of the experiment.

Pteridine and folate research has long been recognized as important for many biological processes, such as amino acid metabolism, nucleic acid synthesis, neurotransmitter synthesis, cancer, cardiovascular function, and growth and development of essentially all living organisms.
Since pteridine and folate biology uses concepts and experimental techniques drawn from all of these disciplines, the breadth of this volume is its great strength, bringing together researchers from a wide variety of fields including biochemistry, chemistry, physics, biophysics, genetics, microbiology, cell and molecular biology, virology, immunology, cancer, neurobiology and medicine.
This volume should be a valuable and unique reference work for scientists with interests in these areas as well as those seeking up to date information.

Lab 8: Chromatography of Drosophila melanogaster eye pigments
There are two classes of pigment molecules found in Drosophila melanogaster eye cells:  the ommochromes and the pteridines.
(Ziegler, 1961.)  Because the pteridine pigments are soluble in mixtures of ammonium hydroxide and n-propyl alcohol, they have been extensively studied by chromatography.
There should be six types of pteridine pigments visible in the chromatogram for a wild type fly:  drosopterins, isoxanthopterin, xanthopterin, sepiapterin, 2-amino-4-hydroxypteridine, biopterin, and isosepiapterin.

In addition to pteridines, the synthesis of 7-deazaguanines has also been developed.
