Polymnia - Pteris -- Plant Delights Nursery Catalog Page 84
Pteris cretica has a very wide range (mostly Asian), but some botanists insist that a stand found in the Florida Panhandle, just north of Marianna, Florida, is a native one.
This is still hotly disputed, but it grows beside the native needle palms in a very undisturbed area in Jackson Co. We now have spore-grown plants from this population and are making those available for folks who want to grow or study the differences between this and other populations.

 The Pteris fern
Various species of Pteris are common in greenhouses and are very good for development of sporangia.
Ripe spores of some fern or other can be obtained at any greenhouse at any time in the year, and spores of most of our native ferns germinate well and produce good prothallia, even if the sowing is not made for several months after the spores have been gathered.
Pteris aquilina and many other ferns often furnish a good supply of antheridia 3 weeks after sowing, and the archegonia appear soon after, but it is well to make sowings 6 weeks before material is needed for use.

Fern - Pteris adscensionis: More Information - ARKive
Endemic to Ascension Island in the south Atlantic, Pteris adscensionis is found mainly in Cricket Valley with a remnant population in Breackneck Valley (3).
In Pteris adscensionis however, the sexual stage of the lifecycle does not occur and the spore-producing plant develops directly from the prothallus (4).
Pteris adscensionis once constituted an important component of the vegetation of Ascension Island; this species has undergone a dramatic decline however, and is now absent from the summit of Green Mountain.

 Fern Tissue Culture
The growth of Pteris vittata spores in ½ strength MS with 30 g/l sucrose solidified with 8 g/l bacto-agar indicates that this fern is not very sensitive to the presence or absence of growth regulators.
Pteris vittata (Figure 1) belongs to the family Pteridaceae and is commonly called Chinese brake or rusty brake and has medicinal purposes (Zamora 1986).
Spores of Pteris vittata were easy to germinate (7 days) in the medium with 1 mg/l BAP and 0.1 mg/l NAA although germination also occurred in the absence of growth regulators and in higher sucrose concentration (30 g/l).

The Neopian Times - Neopia's fill-in-the-blank news source
Today, Pteris are known to travel from Neopia Central to Mystery Island to escape the winter, and the only Pteris that seem to genuinely enjoy the chilly weather are the Christmas and Snowy varieties.
The call of the Rainbow Pteri is sometimes heard in Mystery Island, and if you happen to have a feather from the Rainbow Pteri, then that might fetch you a good-sized sack of Neopoints (because their feathers are just so pretty and colorful, if you know what I mean!!).
Granted, all Pteris are highly respectable, but I simply couldn't write about all of them (I have to bring my Pterattack score up after all and save for Pteri Battle items!!) I would like to close this article by sharing some other little bits of info about Pteris that the average person might not know.

 Brake Fern | Phytoremediation
The Chinese brake fern (Pteris vittata) is a fern that is native to Asia, Africa, and Australia.
The American brake fern, Pteris vittata, is claimed to be the first found to function as an arsenic hyperaccumulator.
Pteris vittata, or brake fern, could potentially be used to clean up the poison, which is both naturally occurring in soil and unnaturally present in farm chemicals, wood preservatives, and other products.

ARS | Publication request: Mechanisms of Arsenic Hyperaccumulation in Pteris Species: Root As Influx and Translocation
Technical Abstract: Several species of fern from the Pteris genus are able to accumulate extremely high concentrations of arsenic in the fronds.
The arsenate influx could be described by Michaelis-Menten kinetics and the kinetic parameter Km was found to be lower in the Pteris species, indicating higher affinity of the transport protein for arsenate.
The significantly augmented translocation of arsenic to the shoots that was seen in these As hyperaccumulator species is proposed to be due to decreased sequestration of As in the roots, as a larger fraction of arsenic could be extracted from roots of the Pteris species than from roots of N. exaltata.

Natural History Museum: Research and Collections: Botany: Alien Ferns in Hawaii: Pteris vittata
The appearance of Pteris vittata L., Chinese Brake, is documented by a collection of W. Safford from O'ahu in 1887 (BISH #09092).
Reported in 1950 as occurring on three of the islands (O'ahu, Maui, and Hawaii), there seem to be no specimens of it from Moloka'i, although it probably has been overlooked, ignored, or dismissed by collectors there.
Pteris vittata is native to Africa, Asia, and Australia, and is now widely naturalized in scattered warm regions of the Americas.

 Pteris cretica
Varieties – There are about 280 Pteris species found in the tropics and subtropics.
Characteristic of the brakes are the bush-like fronds which arise from short, underground rhizomes.
Pteris cretica has either fertile (curly leaf edge) or sterile (serrated) fronds on long fl stems.

A Cryo-SIMS Study of the Arsenic-Hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata
These plants are known as hyperaccumulators1 and are a promising method of cheap, environmentally sound remediation of contaminated land or water sites.
The brake fern, Pteris vittata, is an arsenic (As) hyperaccumulator and can accumulate concentrations as high as 22,600 mg As kg
In order to understand the mechanisms that enable the accumulation of such vast quantities of an element renowned for its toxicity to living organisms, it is of great importance to determine the sub-cellular localisation of the As.
