Transversing this region is the Gulf Stream, a river of Subtropical water that originates in the Caribbean Sea and flows to the north northeast until it collides with the southward flow of the Labrador Current.
Although, they are known to occur year-round, pelagic trips to Pterodroma Alley at present, only occur from May through October.
There are no other Pterodroma species which would be expected except as an extreme vagrant.

 Fea's Petrel
Fea's Petrel (Pterodroma feae), is now known to occur annually in small numbers over deep water off North Carolina USA, and less frequently as far north as Nova Scotia, Canada.
This enigmatic species is thought to be restricted to the north Atlantic, breeding on the Cape Verde Islands and also on Bugio, part of the Desertas group near Madeira.
A series of pterodroma petrels observed from seawatches in Ireland, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands most probably belong to this species.

surfbirds.com - The fight to save the Cahow
The Cahow (Pterodroma cahow) is a member of the gadfly petrel family, most closely related to the Atlantic P.
As is common with several other Pterodroma species (Probst, et al 2000), predation by introduced mammals (dogs, cats and rats) has been a major cause in the decline in the Cahow.
If the breeding population was reduced to 36 birds in the 1950s with an unknown floating population of non breeders (failed breeders or birds not of breeding age – which they may be up to six years) (Warham, 1990), then such a population bottleneck must have deleterious effects on genetic fitness.

Fea's Petrel Pterodroma feae is an extremely rare and threatened Macaronesian endemic petrel, known to exist only on Bugio and some of the Cape Verde Islands.
On the basis of sub-fossil Pterodroma bones, the species is believed formerly to have bred on Deserta Grande, Porto Santo and the main island of Madeira (Pieper 1985).

Petrel" for Pterodroma leucoptera (the seabird world very broadly uses White-winged Petrel, reserving "Gould's Petrel" for the nominate race if one splits up this taxa) but that's a different issue, although not unrelated.....
Pterodroma examples include Bonin, Trinidade, Phoenix and Kermadec Petrels, all of which breed on more than the island used in their name.
Having led tours in Chile and having had to deal with Pterodroma defilippiana now for years with birders it is obvious that this name is confusing and causes spelling problems for most of us.

For an overview of the importance of the endemic forests birds (not including the Jamaica Petrel) in the Blue and John Crow Mountains, see Varty (1991).
However, Hellmayr and Conover (1948), Bourne (1965) and Benson (1972) still maintained its taxonomic distinctiveness, Bourne (1965) indicating that it "appears to be a small dark race" of the Black-capped Petrel.
It is however important to note the apparent variation that Black-capped Petrels can show (Noble 1916, Murphy 1936), and further comparisons are perhaps in order to clarify the taxonomy position.

In the Pacific Ocean we found rapid and early divergence of four taxa of "long-winged" Pterodroma at Juan Fernandez, Kermadec, Galapagos, and Hawaii archipelagoes.
The variation may be a "signature" of enormous populations once present at the archipelago before Polynesian contact.

Terrestrial Ecoregions -- Bermuda subtropical conifer forests (NA0301)
Restricted to this small archipelago, all endemic species are especially vulnerable to introduced predators and alien pests, and unfortunately the islands have seen the extinction of many species since the time of human settlement.
These are the cahow, or Bermuda petrel (Pterodroma cahow), and the locally-termed "chick-of-the-village" (Vireo griseus bermudianus), a subspecies of the white-eyed vireo that has shorter wings, a larger head, and stout legs (BBP 1997).
Bermuda holds the distinction of having passed the first conservation laws in the New World, protecting the cahow (Pterodroma cahow) and other birds as early as 1616 (Sterrer 1998a) and limiting the uses of native cedar as early as 1622 (Rueger and von Wallmenich 1996).

Previously mistaken for Trindade petrels (Pterodroma arminjoniana) at Ilha da Trindade, they were identified by the whitish shafts and largely white inner webs of their primaries and, at the colony, by their distinctive call.

The nesting of the species in former times is well documented: it was known to have nested on Soufrière mountain, Basse Terre, during the nineteenth century (Lawrence 1891; see Remarks 2 and Remarks 2 under the Jamaica Petrel Pterodroma caribbaea).
This estimate was possible as a result of the experience gained in work on the closely related Cahow Pterodroma cahow of Bermuda (see relevant account).
This estimated number would hold true if the number of pairs per colony had remained the same in the 20-year period since their discovery, but it is likely that the number of pairs per colony had diminished in parallel with an overall decline in the number of colonies (Woods 1987).

Re: 4 spp. of Pterodroma off Hatteras
Brian's photo of the dorsal side in the article matches what I recall of the bird -- very slender and long wings with parallel sides (i.e., not as tapered as other Pterodormas)and a narrow base, and a rather long or slender body/tail beyond the wings.
The body was slender as well, giving a very buoyant aspect in the air that recalled a tern or Bulwer's Petrel rather than a Pterodroma that I was familiar with.
Essentially none of us who saw the bird reasonably well (it was about 30% off the sun in not good light) had any experience with Bermuda, but I have considerable experience with Fea's and of course Black-capped, and knew it wasn't either of them.

Later the preserved bird was stored in the University of Turin Museum.

A new species of petrel has been described, based on specimens collected at sea.
The Vanuatu Petrel Pterodroma occulta, is closely related to the White-necked Petrel Pterodroma cervicalis but is smaller, with a longer tail and different primary colours.
It is presumed to breed in the Banks Islands or elsewhere in northern Vanuatu and has reached north-east Australia, so it is likely to be a transequatorial migrant.
